Twitter rumor mill ramping up UNLV BB (read at own risk)

UNLV aside, the WAC was a tier above the Big West. While UNLV had its occasional regular season loss, they won every single regular season AND tournament title. Tark's Rebels got better and better as they made their locked-in NCAA appearances. They never really faced any serious competition in their conference season. As his tenure went on, Tark started scheduling tougher OOC teams. Had UNLV played in the WAC back then, I don't think they would have had as much exposure to the NCAA Tournament due to facing stiffer competition in the 70's through the 80's. They would have had to play Bear Haskins' UTEP squads twice a year, along with New Mexico, Utah, byu*, and Jim Brandenburg's Cowboys in Laramie once a year. No home court for the Conference Tournament either. It rotated around the conference. I just don't see UNLV's presence in the NCAA's being as ridiculously routine as it became.

I think it was Greg Anthony who said Santa Barbara was the toughest road venue he ever played in.  That says something as UNLV hit up Arkansas in '90-'91 and LSU with Shaq the year before.

@4UNLV, that sound right? It might have been Tark who said it.

No joke, when the Thunderdome gets packed, that place is nuts. I was at the UNC game where John McEnroe got thrown out. Wild time.

I honestly hope the Rebs get Pitino. But it seems every time the position comes open, you hear all these crazy names thrown around, a few "done deal" posts, and then you end up with Dave Rice or some other loser.

It would be great for the conference as a whole if he got the position. I'm just not totally convinced that if Marv is canned, the Rebs won't end up with whoever is currently coaching Cheyenne High right now.

You'd risk your career on someone so narcissistic they couldn't give half a sh-t about you?

Wanna buy some prime real estate near Pioche?

There would be record revenue under Pitino and my phone would be ringing off the hook with P5 programs begging for me to go to their school.

Let’s not be overdramatic, DRF’s career won’t be in danger, she’s too connected.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again- a BIG part of UNLV's success was its dominance of a pretty poor conference. Coach Tark was a man among boys when UNLV was in the BWAC. It was a pretty similar situation to where Gonzaga is now. Pretty easy to recruit when you can guarantee a player will be Big Dancing every season...

Don’t agree with that at all.  As mentioned above as the 80’s progressed the PCAA/Big West wasn’t a bad league, multiple NCAA bids a couple of times.

Jerry though was well aware of the perception of the PCAA/Big West and as the 80’s  moved forward used the OOC schedule to get a quality seed in the NCAA tournament.

You don’t get the seeds they received back then playing primarily cupcakes.  This also helped in recruiting as well.

I can't remember, but I do know somebody said it. the gauchos had the rebs number, no doubt. drove us all crazy, lol.

But I always liked Jerry Pimm, he beat the rebs, but he wasn't annoying about it. Plus he lived on his houseboat after he got divorced, so he got points for that.

We helped a bit during one of those years.

UCSB in 87-88 / #10 seed:

Beat NC State at home with Vinny Del Negro and Chucky Brown who was a 3 seed.

Beat Oregon State at home with Gary Payton who was a 12 seed.  Those two ooc wins were enough for an at-large bid

...And for good measure we swept UNLV

89-90 / #9 seed.

No notable wins ooc.  3rd in conference.  UNLV trickle down effect resulted in a better seed than in '88.

NMSU in '89-'90 / #6 seed

Split with UTEP who was an #11 seed with Greg Foster and Antonio Davis.

Swept UNM who won three NIT games with Luc Longley.

Beat Texas Southern who was a #14 seed.

UNLV's rise also brought some old BWC programs up - Fresno was decent, Utah State came on, NMSU had some solid teams and then Cal-Irvine UCSB & LBSU had some talent........UNLV helped bring most of the BWC up a step

Futrell's sold on Pitino.  Wouldn't mind some of the old timers giving their speculation on why the Wynns turned on Tark. (paging Ernie)  Futrell wanted to give his thoughts on it, but Shapiro wouldn't bite.

Thinking it would have been much better off - Considering UNLV was moving from being a ranked D-II program to D-I in 1978 thus UNLV left the old WCAC (now WCC) and hired FB coach Tony Knapp away from D-1AA Boise St after Ray Meyer left UNLV for SMU.

UNLV was new to D-1 but was competitive right away even beating #8 BYU during that dalliance with the WAC from 1978 to 1982 and handed New Mexico their worst home loss ever 72-7 in ABQ

UNLV's worst season was 6-6 playing a WAC schedule

Once the invite didn't come (thanks BYU & Utah :() UNLV was relegated to the PCAA and FB after 1984 sort of died off and was in the shadow of the resurgent BB program

Think BB would have been fine regardless, but not getting that WAC invite really set FB back and it never recovered from a promising 4 year start at the D-I level
