UC Santa Barbara at UC Irvine

Recommended Posts

My reward for winning the Pick 10 contest.  The first of my two UCSB game threads posted here in 2018-2019.  All hail @mugtang.

DATE: Saturday, February 16
TIME: 9 p.m.
SITE: The Bren Event Center (5,000), Irvine, California
TV: ESPN2 / Watch ESPN app

UC Santa Barbara leads the all-time series 52-40.  UC Irvine won the previous meeting on January 31, a 66-62 overtime affair at the Thunderdome

The Anteaters have won 7 of the last 10 vs the Gauchos in the Bren Event Center.

UCI defeated Hawaii 67-56 in their previous game.  UCSB lost at UC Riverside 71-57

UCSB won their season opener 76-66 at Wyoming, their only game vs Mountain West competition this season.  UCI lost 89-65 at home to Utah State.  As a sidenote, UCI and Utah State both defeated Saint Mary's this season.

The Gauchos have five players averaging double figures in scoring, led by grad transfer Ar'Mond Davis (13.8 ppg) and freshman Amadou Sow (11.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg).  Sophomore point guard Devearl Ramsey, formerly of Nevada, is third at 10.8 ppg and leads the team in assists with 3.5 apg.

UCSB leads the Big West in offensive rebounds per game (12.2) and 3 point field goal defense (currently 29.2%.  Was 7th in the nation as of February 11th), and is third in conference in free throw percentage (70.7%).

Joe Pasternack is 40-16 at UCSB.

The Anteaters are led in scoring by junior Max Hazzard (12.2) and junior Evan Leonard (10.2)  Jonathan Galloway paces UCI with 8.2 rebounds per game.

UC Irvine has the offspring of a few former NBA players.  In addition to Hazzard (grandson of the late Walt Hazzard), there is also senior Spencer Rivers (son of Doc Rivers, currently the Los Angeles Clippers head coach) and freshman JC Butler (Caron Butler) .

Hope this meets  @UNLV2001 's approval for pregame threads.

Sorry JD, but ever since the days of Branduinn Fullove, I haven’t been able to root for the Gauchos. Besides that, the more wins UCI racks up, the better that win looks on USU’s resume. I’m hoping that the anteaters can get in the top 100 before Selection Sunday.

Wait. What?  You lost at Riverside?  What happened?  Someone left the badminton nets up and your players ran into them? Kind of a bad loss.

How often does UCR have to schedule around intramural games to get their own games in?

I never heard of these teams. Are they NAIA schools?

Just our lucky break.  Stanford-UCLA had a 35 minute delay due to a loose rim so their game is still going on ESPN2 :foottap:

The game moved to ESPN News until the conclusion of Stanford-UCLA.
