Hazelton to K-State

Recommended Posts

I was telling a KSU alum friend of mine just last week I thought this could happen when Klieman got the KSU job.  Klieman was the DB coach under DC Hazelton at NDSU.

I completely understand the move and wish Hazelton luck but this one stings.

Would be promote someone already on staff or look outside to replace him?

I heard Stanard was coming back.

Don't shoot the messenger.  :surrender:

I would think we would look outside.  This is a huge blow.

He took the kids under Stanard and made them into one of the best defenses in the league the next year.  The talent exists on the D today.  We need the leader that can bring the best out of them.  Bohl's a defensive guy and Hazelton meshed with Bohl, and mostly the kids, quite well.  Stanard was an asshole and a screamer to the players.

I think leadership is just as important, if not more important, than finding the defensive mind.  Bohl's got the Xs and Os.  I don't know if there is anyone on staff, quire honestly.  I think we go outside to.

Stanard was not just an asshole and a screamer but he was a shitty LB Coach when he was DC at CSU.  He had no idea how to coach filing proper gaps and when players asked questions he'd scream at them some more.  Many of the players knew the position, better than he did.

I'll never forget  Stanard at the booster club golf Tourney one year.  He was there on a tee box to help us with our distance. We could use his tee shot if we wanted to.  He crushed one and proudly stood there with her chest puffed out.  And then watched as everyone on our team blew it by him by at least 30 yards.

Go outside. Bump the base to about $550k with bonuses (boni?) to $800k and get someone good...

$800K for a G5 DC?  Just from an outside perspective, I have to question that.  I'm on board with paying all you can afford, but how much can you afford.  If you drop $800K on a DC some key assistants are going to be underpaid unless you've got a P5 budget, and you don't.  I don't have a clue what Wyo's asst. pool is but it can't be that high.  Besides, Bohl is a defensive specialist.  If he's going to blow that kind of money on a coordinator I'd think it should go to an OC.  The better he hires on that side of the ball, the more time he can spend on what he's really good at.

Bite the bullet.  Go get Stanard on the cheap so you can afford a real O-line.  It's not rocket surgery.
