Democrat Thunderdome - 2020 Democratic Candidate Thread

The candidate has already been picked by the DNC and it’s Biden. They know Bernie or Warren has zero chance. The next few months are just smoke and mirrors.

Nah. As toonkee pointed out if Bernie wins some early states and becomes the front runner the DNC will know they can’t screw him over without killing turnout and gift wrapping the election for Trump. If Bernie becomes the nominee self interest will kick in and people will fall in line.

... and it will gift-wrap the election for Trump.

Bernie Sanders can't win in a general election. How can he? He will motivate the Republicans, and discourage moderate Democrats.

Welcome to the Sophie’s choice Berners had to make with Clinton.

The left is simply fractured right now.

They shouldn’t have wasted three years going after Trump instead of finding and developing a likable moderate candidate with a sensible agenda that would appeal to voters.

Not sure it works that way. A large party of the right was swayed by Trump fighting the establishment. A really big part of the left is anti establishment as well. If you're into Bernie, getting money out of politics, etc. no corporate DNC pac funded candidate is going to be appealing.

Correct,  he peels off a lot is anti establishment populist voters who may have pulled the lever for Trump since Trump has failed since he is a faux populist.   Democrats will enthusiastically support anyone not named Trump.  Letting Trumpists tell us to pick another moderate clintonian candidate would be their best wish.   No moderate of either party is voting Trump but they WILL vote for someone.

Eh, whatever. I haven’t seen this mythical moderate democrat campaign win a GE, so I find this “yOu HaVe To RuN oN a MoDeRaTe PlAtFoRm!” Conventional wisdom pretty funny.

Yeah,  all we need is another John Kerry, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton uninspiring status quo Democrat in order to capture this non-existent unicorn moderate who may be vacillating between a white supremacist and a Democrat.

You're unecessarily exercising your fingers by criticizing Bernie here.

To my knowledge at least, not even one poster remains who wants to see him get the nomination.

That is certainly not correct.  We have several Bernie Bros here.

All polling disagrees.

The moderate Democrats will vote blue no matter what, The Bernie wing of the party is the one who's mostly likely to throw  a hissyfit if he doesn't get the nomination.

The only reason I give Trump shit is because of the rhetoric he uses. It pisses me off to know that there's such a strong hatred of minorities.

Oh well what are you gonna do? Haters gonna hate.

I stand corrected. The SJSU guys seem just about as savvy when it comes to politics as their school is when it comes to sports.

Boom goes the dynamite.

Yea because middle of the road guy has such a good track record over the last 20 years. The only democratic candidate that has won this century ran on “hope and change” and energized the democratic base; call me crazy but, maybe they should try that again?

A moderate would win them the election vs Trump I think.  There are enough people that don't like Trump but don't want the big changes that Bernie offers. This isn't your typical Presidential election this year.

The only trend I see among Democratic candidates in general elections seems to be the ones with charisma win, and the ones without it lose. Maybe there was a time when that wasn’t the case, but it certainly seems to be that way now.

Donald Trump won last time. If you win the nomination of one of the major parties you can win the Presidency, socialists included.

It seems much of the country has fallen into the belief that Donald Trump's ascendency is normal and that Trump himself is a typical Republican.

The times they are a changing.

Even less than the parties, the political commentariat don’t seem to understand the electorate is shifting beneath their feet. Nobody has a good handle on it yet. If Biden comes in 3rd or 4th tonight watch them all freak out.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.
