Dang this gives the state of Utah 7 D-1 programs .........that's a lot for a state with 2.3 million people

Wonder if Dixie is eyeing the Big Sky for FB?? That would give the state 3 BSC teams like Idaho had back in the 1980's

3.1 million people and growing at a 14+% clip and 40% of the population under 18. It's current size is similar to the state of Mississippi, which also has 3 FBS programs (Ole Miss, Miss. St., Southern Miss) and 3 FCS programs (Mississippi Valley, Jackson St., Alcorn St.)...but Mississippi isn't growing like Utah and has older demographics.

Utah sort of has a built in growth program few other states have

Herman knows Stunner? Who knew?

He was as particular about the comfortable arrangement of his part of the MWCboard, as an old stage-driver is about the snugness of his box. When close to the whale, in the very death-lock of the fight, he handled his unpitying lance coolly and off-handedly, as a whistling tinker his hammer. He would hum over his old rigadig tunes while flank and flank with the most exasperated monster. Long usage had converted the jaws of death into an easy chair.

If current growth rates continue, within 15-20 years Utah will surpass Connecticut, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Alabama and will be about the same size as Wisconsin.

Oops. That 14% growth rate is since the 2010 Census. The annual growth rate is closer to about 2% per year. So, at current growth rates, Utah will be the size of Oklahoma in about 10 years and will surpass 4 million in about 15 years.

Here is a look at Dixie's basketball arena.

Nice looking floor. Not overdone with graphics like ours is at SJSU. Kudos to the WAC. A lot of people wrote them off when they dropped football, but they've adapted.

Couple of things:

1.  Stunner keeps mentioning the rate of growth of Washington county.  That's correct, but there is a problem.  They're running out of water, and there's no reasonable alternative source.  The growth won't go on forever, and in fact, will have to stop soon.

2.  As has been mentioned, Utah's demographics skew young.  There are more college age Utahns than you would expect from the total population.

3.  As has been mentioned, Dixie probably draws some out of state kids from Nevada and Arizona, probably LDS kids who want to be closer to home, but still go to college in a majority LDS environment.

4.  BYU only kinda, sorta counts as a Utah D1 program, since a significant fraction of the students come from all over the US.

(1).  Utah moving forward with a billion dollar water pipeline from Lake Powell to St. George Utah.   We'll see how soon it happens.

(2)   Washington County has 160,000 residents but is projected to exceed 500,000 residents by 2065.

(3)   Dixie State University's growth will be interesting to watch.    If growth continues, it might impact some of Utah's cold weather schools.

(4)  35% of BYU's students are from the State of Utah.  30,843: undergraduate students x .35 = 10,795 Utah undergrads.    In comparison, USU's undergraduate enrollment is 16,184.  Dixie's is about 9,000.

In response to the pictures of the WAC arenas shown, the RGV recently opened the Bert Ogden Arena for the the G-League Vipers and UTRGV has played at least a game there (Oklahoma).  UMKC was playing at the historical and beautiful Municipal Auditorium until this season when they went back to their much smaller on campus arena (pictured).  Seattle is playing in the Redhawk Arena this year, their on campus gym.  The jury is out on whether they will play in the new Key Arena when completed or if they will get a new on campus arena (that's the rumor).  Cal Baptist just opened their arena last year.

Agreed.  The WAC is looking like a decent basketball conference.

Membership would probably soon look like this:

1---Grand Canyon

2---Cal Baptist

3---Utah Valley

4---Dixie State

5---Seattle

6---UTRGV

7---New Mexico State.

SJSU????

8---Chicago State

9---UMKC

Also rumors that the WAC might add 1 or 2 additional Texas schools.

West Texas a&m maybe?

The only 2 other schools that have been confirmed as being approached by the WAC are Tarleton State and Metro State (Denver)
