Maria Butina, accused Russian agent, reaches plea deal with prosecutors that includes cooperation

Maria Butina, a 30-year-old Russian gun rights activist who stands accused developing a covert influence operation in the United States, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy and cooperate with federal, state and local authorities in any ongoing investigations.

She admits, as part of the deal, according to a copy obtained by ABC News that is expected to be filed to the court, that she and an unnamed “U.S. Person 1,” which sources have identified as longtime Republican operative Paul Erickson, with whom she had a multiyear romantic relationship, “agreed and conspired, with a Russian government official (“Russian Official”) and at least one other person, for Butina to act in the United States under the direction of Russian Official without prior notification to the Attorney General.”

Based on the description, the “Russian Official” appears to be Alexander Torshin, deputy governor of the Russian Central Bank and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Under his direction, the agreement said, she “sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over U.S. politics.”

Fun side note, she played the doorknobs at the NRA like fools too !

Also recall how Erickson tried to arrange a back-channel between Trump and Putin in order to facilitate a meeting between the two back in May 2016. He also then acted as an advisor to the Trump Transition team.

Then there's this gem from FreedomFest 2015 where Trump just happens to call on Butina for a question... and she asks about Russian sanctions.

Now, if you step back a few months to the 2015 NRA convention, Trump met with Torshin while he was attending the event. Butina then documented meeting a "political candidate" at a "political event" in the latter half of 2015. The only event matching that description that she attended was in fact FreedomFest... where she went on to ask Trump his first question regarding Russian relations, and specifically sanctions. In his response, he blasts Mexico (which was also a theme for his speech) and China, says that he would get along great with Russia and Putin, and that we wouldn't need sanctions with them.

So in early 2015 you have Trump signaling that he's going to run for President by not renewing his deal with NBC for The Apprentice. Soon after that, he meets with Torshin (however briefly) at the NRA Convention in April 2015. Simultaneously, Butina is working with Torshin to get funding for a "Diplomacy" project for 2015-2016, to interface with "Political Party 1", specifically through connections that she gained through Erickson. She's also going back and forth with Erickson on how best to leverage those contacts during that same timeframe. Then she just happens to be called on by Trump at FreedomFest to answer a question about Russian sanctions.

Yeah, yeah, Daily Beast whatever... they're saying this is directly from the plea agreement, we'll find out on Wednesday, and Woodruff was a long-time writer for conservative outlets before joining them.

It is all over now, Trump talked to a Russian!:hahaha:

This is a complicated and intertwined investigation that is way over your level of depth and ability to think beyond the basics of a Fox News model - Just stick with Benghazi & "Lock her up" chants until the full results can be explained on an 8th grade level that you possibly might understand.

Just keep repeating WITCH HUNT & LOCK HER UP and maybe you'll feel better in the morning after the meds kick in

It is pretty simple investigation so far.

No evidence of a crime we know of other than campaign finance violation.

It is only hard when you are so invested in your political hypocrisy, you can't even think straight.   HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

The word of a Russian spy should carry zero weight in a US Court of Law.

Trumps too phukking stupid to collude with Russia.. He’s a self serving shitbag who’d throw America under the bus for a buck, but he’s a mental midget who can’t shut his mouth. But I think it’s possible and probable Russia knows this, and sought to influence the people around him who in turn would influence him.

Trumps Tuesday afternoon is more scandalous than 8 years of Obama. He’s filthy up to his phukking eyeballs and so is everyone around him.

I’ll never understand why old, poor, uneducated white people love this guy.

You lie to yourself.  That is pretty hard for everyone else to understand.

It should carry weight in certain contexts... as in using it as a voice to narrate actual hard inculpatory evidence. But I do agree, it shouldn't be believed or used on its own. I think the bigger coup here has to do with what information she has that could assist with counterintelligence operations.

Nobody knew anything about her... that's why they conducted six consular visits, passed four diplomatic notes, had Sergei Lavrov speak to Pompeo about her on two different occasions.

Oh, and they changed both the Russian and English language twitter accounts for their foreign ministry with #FreeButina avatars months ago.

You very well could be right. I actually think he might have been smart enough to reject certain meetings, talks, etc, when he saw the Russians were up to something.  But it's obvious the people around him, that he hired, were more willing to participate in bad stuff.  Trump should at least be accountable for his judgment and lack of institutional control.  The buck stops.

This is all part of Putin’s strategy.  She wouldn’t be cooperating without the Kremlin’s say so.  Putin is playing 3 dimensional chess while we’re here playing tic-tac-toe. He has out maneuvered us for over a decade now and continues to out maneuver us.
