Looking at the bowl situation

Hawaii has an auto tie-in to the Hawaii Bowl whenever they are eligible (and do not make an access bowl).  They have likely already been extended and accepted their bowl bid.  The result of the SDSU game doesn't matter.

Nope not the case this year in terms of auto accepting. The MW offices are playing hard ball and saying no auto extension will be given to any bowl game. Local media guys saying some other schools have expressed dissatisfaction with Hawaii being given the auto invite to the Hawaii bowl when bowl eligible. Especially this year when there could be more bowl eligible teams in the conference(7 if Wyoming wins this weekend) than conference bowl auto tie in games(5/6 including being a backup).

The ESPN Regional people that run the Hawaii bowl have said that they want Hawaii in the game whenever possible, so we will see who wins out. My guess is ESPN wins out in the end.

Snubbing a bowl-eligible Hawaii team by denying them a Hawaii Bowl berth — making them the only 7-win team in the country left out of the post-season — would be the height of stupidity.  The local fans would be furious and would boycott the game.  You’re talking at least 20,000 fewer tickets sold at $25 or more each... that’s half a million bucks minimum in foregone revenue.  And then you’ve got the added costs of flying in two teams and their retinues instead of one... There’s no way ESPN lets that happen.

I'm sure Hawaii will be in the Hawaii Bowl this year. But in future years I'm sure Hawaii would draw well in the Vegas Bowl if they ever won the league (actually I guess next year is our last with it, unless they create another game).

Wow! How can they do that when a Hawaii invite is actually written into the bowl's charter?  Since ESPN owns the bowl I can't see how any MWC team other than Hawaii ends up getting the bid.

According our beat writer.

"The assumption is UH is guaranteed the Hawaii Bowl. It will be invited, but no, there is no guarantee of it according to the bylaws."

Just glad we don't have to deal with the Holiday Bowl Committee, they soon will have to deal with us!

You think we'll take that spot after losing the Vegas Bowl?

God no, the way we have come unraveled, IF we even get an invite, it will be the equivalent of the "Twinkie Bowl" in El Paso or some similarity.

Reference was to the local bowl committee thumbing their collective noses (issue here years ago in San Diego) to the MWC and overlooking the local team. IOW- "Them, Them, F-Them"

right now on ESPN+ 5-6 Miami (OH) tied with 4-7 Ball State to start the third quarter....MAC already has five bowl eligible teams (9-2 buffalo, 7-4 niu, 7-4 ohio, and toledo, emu and wmu all sitting at 6-5) and only five guaranteed slots, plus a backup slot with the quick lane bowl.

Don't forget the minute possibility that UCF loses, making the MWC champion the highest rated G5 champ. That opens up another MWC bowl tie in.

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

reports are that BYU will be invited to the First Responders Bowl in Dallas (Cotton Bowl), against CUSA.  This used to be called the "Heart of Dallas Bowl", and was recently rebranded.

BYU will take the Big Ten's spot.

This should clear up BYU taking a spot.   MWC might have a chance at getting a Frisco Bowl invite.

ybu won't deserve a bowl game after they get their a$$es handed to them by Utah this weekend.

You better hope that USU can beat Boise this weekend, and then also win the MWC conference championship, or else USU is looking at yet another Potato Bowl.

Potato would be fun every once in a while, but not every year.   The Potato has almost become USU's Bowl Game.

Can't the people who own the new stadium (that was just voted in) prevent the bowl from using it?

The MWC (or SDSU) should get a tie in--at least with the caveat that they must be a Top 10/15 team and not in an Access Bowl.

That was the point entirely. They will come on their knees begging. Can't wait!

There will most likely be 82 eligible teams to fill 78 bowl slots.  81 teams are bowl eligible already and 5-6 Virginia Tech still has to play Marshall at home next week.  They could lose since they lost to Old Dominion this year, but I am penciling them in as a likely win at this point.  That means that 4 eligible teams will not make a bowl this year.

The way it works is that bowl slots are filled based on conference bowl affiliations (or primary affiliations).  If a bowl cannot be filled by a conference, then they go to the conference that serves as the secondary affiliation (or backup), if one exists.  For example, the MWC is the backup for the Cheez-It Bowl should either the PAC-12 (#7) or BIG-12 (#6) be unable to provide enough eligible teams.  At this point, it looks like they will, even if Oklahoma makes the playoff, but stranger things have happened.  A primary or secondary affiliation can be filled by any eligible team as deemed by the conference (the conference may have their own internal rules but, that is up to them whether to place a 6-6 or 8-4 team in a bowl).

When no primary or secondary affiliation exists, different conferences can try to woo or convince bowls to take their teams.  However, and this is important, bowls in this situation must use overall record to determine which teams get the final bowl slots.  So if there are five eligible teams remaining for the final bowl slot and four of them are 6-6 and one is 7-5, the bowl has to take the 7-5 team, even if they have to bypass a power conference team to do so.

Now, things can get even more complicated because conferences and bowls can trade their primary affiliations among each other.  They can't get extra slots this way but Conference USA could swap their spot in the New Mexico Bowl for a spot in the Armed Forces Bowl in order to give a team like North Texas a game closer to home.  Also, ESPN outright owns a number of these bowls (and broadcasts about 95% of them) so they play a huge role in determining who goes where.  They do not own or broadcase the Arizona Bowl, which is a big reason why that bowl got stuck with two MWC teams a few years ago.

As I stated earlier, it will come down to the wire as to whether Wyoming is selected for a bowl.  If the MWC does not get a spot in the Cheez-It Bowl, they will have two teams to shop, either SDSU or Nevada (one will get one of our primary bowl affiliations and one won't), and Wyoming.  Because SDSU and Nevada are both 7-5, their chances are pretty decent (would have been closer to 100% if they had both won yesterday) but I suspect that Wyoming will be in the mix for one of the final bowl spots.

This will come down to location, who is left and overall record.  I think Wyoming would get the nod over pretty much any MAC team, but they need to hope that those remaining teams are 6-6, not 7-5.  Wyoming has a good shot against Sun Belt and CUSA teams as well but probably not so much if the game is in Texas or Florida.
