Unlv has a culture problem From the TKM era. Hopefully DRF can pull us out of this nosedive but if not then unlv athletics is toast for good.

I’m not sure who she has in mind, but Todd Simon looks like he’s building something at Southern Utah.

There are no visible signs of coaching at UNLV let alone good coaching. This is not going to change. I said it 3 years ago when all of the excuses were that we didn't have quality players. Well even then those guys only got worse as they received Marv's coaching. Last year was more of the same in terms of excuses and more of the same in terms of results. Now we have a team of only Marv's players with the majority of the team being in their 2nd year under Marv.

I'm not over reacting , unfortunately I'm just disappointed that my expectations are being validated. He isn't the guy and yeah even lowly Todd Simon and Southern Utah will kick our ass.

You act like Todd Simon is garbage.  He’s 38 years old and just getting started in his coaching career.

I took my wife to her first Rebel game last night. Was legitimately appalled and embarrassed. Was tough to even glance at Mediocre Marv. The team looked like they had never played 5-on-5 basketball before, most of their 3,548 turnovers were of the atrociously sloppy category, throwing "passes" right into defenders hands etc. Yikes. Might be the worst Rebel game i've ever seen in person.

Sad that the program is in this utterly pathetic state.

I don’t think Simon is what UNLV needs.

Southern Utah is a great fit for Simon. If they can pack that gym, it’ll be a very tough place to play. Good for him and hope they do well this year.

Menzies keeps saying he’s building a program with 4 year guys and some are total projects as players. He’s saying we need to be patient and so forth. Problem with that is this Menzies is treating the program like it’s New Mexico State. This is UNLV and there shouldn’t be a 5-6 year rebuild that Menzies is planning that may or may not pan out. Only took Lon three years to get going, Rice had the school recruiting at unprecedented levels since the Tark era, Spoonhour had some level of success. I just don’t think it takes 4-5 years to get going at UNLV, even if you are starting from scratch.

Probably going to spend this CBB season watching other programs and potential candidates to take over Menzies. Ashley Howard from Nova, Tommy Lloyd, Crutchfield from Oklahoma.

Many others to watch but Menzies needs to get in gear and start winning games they are supposed to be winning. None of this “this is a rebuild be patient” excuses.

Are they good enough to give you hope for next year?

We dont know yet. 11 freshmen and sophomores. The iq of the individual players is very low. It looks like Menzies thought he could bring in all raw clay and mold it over time. It may be that he overestimated his own abilities, or that he underestimated how raw some of these guys are. Either way thats on him.

They will be better by mwc play and they will be better next season. But how much better? The major problem with Menzies is that he is taking his sweet ass time for a plan that may never pan out. Its all good to have vision, but you have to show people something. You have to produce in a way that breeds excitement about the direction.

Hes falling extremely short here.

We start 0-2 and all were getting are excuses like there was "shrinkage", or "slippage" or whatever. "Theres 11 fr or sophs." "They didnt follow instructions / adjustments."

Unacceptable.

I was curious for multiple reasons but if mediocre Marvin continues to suck it up this is a main reason to fire him.

No doubt. Just based off the two games so far (last minute win vs. Montana whatever and an 11 point loss to LMU) if this trend continues he won't hit his "20 games won" mark. He scheduled garbage teams to pad his wins, but if they can't beat teams that are as bad as LMU is, it certainly will be a long season. And the attendance is just going to continue to suck.

At this point if only one coach could be fired betweeen Sanchez and Menzies... I would go with Menzies.

To put things in perspective, LMU was picked to finish 7th in the WCC.

Also LMU has a lot better head coach than UNLV right now.

Menzies was outcoached by Mike Dunlap.

I was just going to post that Dunlap is no slouch, surprised they got LMU that low. Terrific coach either way.

The WCC has quite a few pretty impressive coaches right now, many of which I'd say have more impressive resumes than Marvin Menzies.

They might not have great records, but they have a lot less resources than what UNLV has.

Really surprised that UNLV went to the bottom of the barrel when they hired Menzies.  I agree with you that he is trying to do a NMSU style rebuild at UNLV.  Won't work.

I think on twitter they said it was around 10k. But from the pictures it looked like 3k.

I'll tell you one thing (and I believe it'll be the only good thing anyone can take out of the Mediocre Marv era)...

Last year I got free tickets as a grad student. Never had any problem whatsoever snagging seats near midcourt and about 10 rows back, which in that general area became my standard seats.

Season OPENER this year, was even easier than most of last year. Walked right in section 107 and sat 9 rows back with my wife AND 3 friends. Nobody even in front of us for 3 rows. Great seats but utterly pathetic especially for a season opener.

I used to do the same crap (sneaking into good seats) way back when I was an undergrad, but was much much harder in the Bayno and Spoon years.

The complete lack of excitement in the program definitely seems at an all-time low.

I think they announced 9000+, and yeah, I think there were probably about 4000-5000 people there.

yeah they're not even pretending to check tickets now. it's pretty much go sit where you want.
