I liked Ramsey. I thought he would have developed into a very good guard for us. Apparently Muss had other plans, though. Glad it's worked out for him, as it did for Leland King before. Playing high-level hoops for a few years in Santa Barbara? There are definitely worse fates.

UCSB isn't a bad team, they aren't a great team, but they aren't a bad team so wasn't really surprised that they beat Wyoming last night. now the question is that since your coach was named in testimony about being involved in this player scheme any nervousness that anything comes out of it if true?

Double digit win opening the season on the road in high elevation, entirely new starting lineup, leading scorer out for concussion protocol.  Your former guard was a big reason why we won.  The Pokes will get healthy before MW play begins and perhaps wreak a little havoc.

 

As for our coach, I'm not that nervous yet.  Speculation that JP was willing to offer a bribe - I think Dawkins said to 'put his feet to the fire' - and evidence he actually did so are two different things. 

 

If there was any concrete evidence he offered a cash bribe, he would have been removed by now.  In any case, Bowen backing off of Arizona helps JP's cause.

UCSB as a whole has not been named in this FBI investigation so my reaction is proceed with caution. We're fine for this season.

We wanted UNLV.  They preferred UC Riverside instead.  

Some of the schedule is the conclusion of series the previous coach signed off on.  Next year should be better.

Fun game, Wolfpack (except for all the excessive foul calls).  You guys have a lot of great talent accumulated.  Was pleased that we hung with you for the first 25-30 minutes.

Our center got a flagrant foul for over the back.   Had to sit out a whole half (other ticky tack fouls).  

I think Nevada took over the game when they were gifted some calls. 

But regardless, clearly Nevada is the better team.   Good game Nevada. 

I felt that call I mentioned in a previous post about a 6 point swing was where the game changed. 

I don’t think it ultimately would have made much of a difference, but I get your frustration.

Long Beach plays a "challenging" schedule to bring in money because there is none to be earned from Big West TV revenue or gate receipts.

UCSB is a campus of the University of California system and therefore doesn't need to concern itself with Big West crumbs because it gets significantly more money from the state than does a CSU school like Long Beach.

As somebody who attended two of the campuses for the unwashed masses, I'm under no illusions that we will always have to work harder to compete than the rich guys.

The whole Cal State vs UC thing is strange.

From the outside looking in, I can't perceive any significant prestige difference between the Big West schools.   Do employers really care if it is UC or Cal State?

There was just no way Ramsey could have ever played positionless basketball. WHich begged the question why he was offered in the first place. Also, I wondered about this with Jazz Johnson but his outside shot makes up for his lack of length at PG.

True. But the positionless ball was born a bit out of necessity, which is why I like Muss so much. He adapts to what he has. This year, we won't be truly positionless when true big men Porter and Brown, and true guards Zouzoua, Johnson, and Henson are on the court.

Ramsey was buried so far on the depth chart I can’t really remember his game. People get too caught up in the fact that he was X number of stars. I pretty sure Muss gives two chits about the star rankings and plays to win every game. Is that a good thing, a bad thing?

This. Just win. Forget egos. If you’re playing hard and effectively you’re on the floor. If not you’re probably not playing. And you better bring it in practice. Everyday.

It's a good thing Muss gives two chits about star rankings and plays to win every game.  Winning and graduating players is what matters most, and Muss checks off both of those boxes regularly. That said, it never hurts to bring in high talent if the talent buys what the coaches believe.
