na·tion·al·ism
/ˈnaSH(ə)nəˌlizəm/
noun
  1. patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts.

It’s not a surprise that the left is desperately looking for any opening they can to hurt Trump because they’ve pretty much whiffed to date. The latest attempted stupidity is making the word “nationalism” into the boogie man. Socialism good, nationalism bad.

Nationalism is nothing more than loving and having pride for your country, and that happens all the time. Nationalism is pulling for USA athletes in the Olympics and being happy when they win, and even being inspired at the gold medal ceremony when the national anthem is played.

Nationalism has a similar effect as capitalism when it comes to the competition between countries that it creates. When competition exists, it creates an environment in which innovation can thrive. And it puts pressure on you to improve your own product so to speak, and we can all benefit from that directly or indirectly.

But sadly as the left proves every day, they are obsessed with words, and love to demonize certain words if it helps them politically. Just because some idiot skinheads and klan members take nationalism and pervert it into their definition, it doesn’t mean that you have to abandon its proper use. Trump has clarified many many times that nationalism to him simply means having love and pride for your country.

Extremists perverting nationalism is a similar situation when we see extremists perverting Islam into their own definition. I don’t see anyone suggesting that people stop using “Muslim” or “Islam” because of these idiots. The left would never put up with that, and there lies their ultimate hypocrisy.

Yet the white nationalists are gobbling that shit up. Trump knows who he’s talking to, and what they will take from it.

Obviously some that might love it are going to add to how Trump uses it. They love to claim that they love their country, but then add to it the white bullshit. Nationalism has nothing to do with race, skin color, religion etc. because most countries have all kinds of different people.

Patriotism is a form of nationalism

I'm definitely not a history major and maybe education is different today.  But in high school, the term "nationalism" was always associated with the rise of the Nazi party. It has a tainted meaning to many because of the way it was taught. I feel I'm patriotic, I love traveling and experiencing other cultures, but I love coming back as well. Nationalism just seems a dangerous extreme version of patriotism.

Most people I know who associate with nationalism have either never left this country and have no desire to or act like every other country should be like the US and treat them like the US does. They don't really have a respect for customs and culture of other countries. This obviously is anectodal evidence, bit it's just what I've experienced.

No, this is definitely a case of the far right trying to change the meaning in the last 18 months

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

We're not supposed to love our country anymore, its not PC.  We're supposed to take a knee for the national anthem, give away our ill gotten wealth and tear down our borders.

Historically, nationalism has more than one meaning.

When combined with Trump's other catch phrase, America First, it harkens back to the AFC (America first committee) just prior to WW2 which advocated isolationist policies and anti-semitism.

So the context in which Nationalism is being invoked by trump and his ilk is isolationist and racist. They aren't even hiding it any more. Miller and all those fine people are out in the open passing these policies and taking violent action. All in the belief the president supports their views.

Please note I am not stating what trump actually believes, just the perception by some of what he means. Words matter.

One of the Final Five..........

Are you serious with this? Take a look at how the Nazis defined nationalism.

I just made a long post stating specifically how Trump has publicly defined what nationalism is to him (love of country) and that’s the definition I posted. The extremists, however, are the ones that have perverted the word into meaning racial superiority. And it’s the extreme folks on the left like you that are trying to pervert it’s meaning just to gain some cheap political points, and that’

Look up nationalism in an old dictionary, and then look up the current definitions and you can see the liberal bias that’s spun them. Those synonyms are hilarious. It’s OK to add a definition as to how extremists have and do use it, but keep it separate from the original, traditional definition.

For you youngsters that weren’t around during the hottest point of the Cold War, especially when public schools had regular emergency drills to drop under your desk and cover your head, nationalism in it’s correct definition was extremely important for morale at a very scary time.

It was the US vs. USSR in everything. Trump was a kid and young man during those times when nationalism was very important in competing with the Soviets. You loved your country, you believed in your country and believed it was superior to theirs based on political system, human rights, freedom and militarily. It wasn’t because we thought our races were superior to Russian races. Good lord.
