The moral roots of liberals and conservatives

Haidt is an interesting and smart dude, but he often toes the line that a lot of psychologists toe (and frankly quantitative social scientists) wherein he tries to explain human behavior with a universal key, be it a gene or a trait or something. Every time I watch or read him, I think he's got some great points and observations but he seems to think there's a universal theory of human behavior that is out there for us to find. He's always worth reading and listening to, though.

Planning is an exercise of power, and in a modern state much real power is suffused with boredom. The agents of planning are usually boring; the planning process is boring; the implementation of plans is always boring. In a democracy boredom works for bureaucracies and corporations as smell works for skunk. It keeps danger away. Power does not have to be exercised behind the scenes. It can be open. The audience is asleep. The modern world is forged amidst our inattention.

Big fan of this talk from way back but I agree. It’s interesting but I don’t know that it’s a 100% solution for explaining why Mugtang is a hillybilly fascist and I’m an anti capitalist globalist statist socialist reprobate.
