We can’t afford it. We’re stuck with Davie for what, 3 more years? He’ll have us back to the Locksley days before he exits. Shut down football and go to the wcc as a basketball only school. I believe it's 1.8 Mil plus his base salary 500K for three years, so about 3.3 mil. I could be wrong it may be more. Edit: after looking it up I estimated one year too many it would be $2,468,070. For the last 3 years guaranteed. 822K per year.

Davie really needs to fire Cosgrove. This defense is barely above what Locksley had. 2 Quote "Make a mistake once and it becomes a lesson, make the same mistake twice and it becomes a choice." Davie is a better coach than Sanchez and Brennan and is probably a better coach than Bobo as well. If he really does have 2-3 years left, he is the most likely of the bottom four to turn it around (not saying that is going to happen though). And with the school about to cut more programs (baseball is on chopping block), we won’t be able to afford a buyout or even a hiring of anyone noteworthy. i am starting to fall into the camp of people who think that we SHOULD be a basketball only school. Wow, did not know baseball was in jeopardy of being cut too. I hope this doesn't affect tuition as I start classes in the spring.

So the buyout would be about $2,470,000, which we don't have. The AD is asking the legislator for 1.5 mil extra just to keep the sports we do have afloat. That wouldn't be a bad scenario, but the truth is the WCC wouldn't take us in. We're obviously good enough from a competitive standpoint, but we don't fit the small religious/private school footprint of that league in the slightest. That conference has a very defined identity, and we don't fit in with it at all. We would inquire, and they would decline. AAC is completely out of question. We simply don't have the clout of a Wichita State to garner an invitation at this point. Maybe if Alford had actually taken us somewhere in March when he was here and had stacked team after stacked team, we would have some bargaining power with that league, but he didn't so we don't. C-USA is trash compared to what it used to be, but would probably be our best option. After C-USA, that leaves us with something like the MVC, Big West or Big Sky as our only other options, and I don't think fans would be happy about any of those. I know I wouldn't be. The truth of the matter at this point in time is that I think our administration is forced to do something about our football program, otherwise our basketball program is in serious trouble. The Bob Davie situation has become very Craig Neal-esque, with the huge extension and buyout now becoming a big problem for us financially. UNM needs to invest in its football program and go all-in 100%, like everyone else in the MWC is doing (besides SJSU), or leave the table.

mysfit
So is it now safe to say Sanchez wasn't a good hire? Or was the money still reason enough to hire him? Just asking because I recall needing lots of kevlar for voicing my opinion on the matter at the time. Curious to know if the fans feel the money was still worth it. The practice facility is a good deal. I'm glad we got it. But, Sanchez has had his time to prove his worth. The time is up and he hasn't proven he can coach at this level. As we move to a new stadium in a few years we need to make a serious change with our coaching staff now. If we can't get serious with hiring an experienced proven coach then I'm all for leaving the MWC and dropping football. Why waste taxpayer dollars for this garbage.
