Is BYU back?

Offense looked competent last night, which is a big improvement over 2017.  That said, Arizona's defense in 2017 ranked almost as poorly as BYU's 2017 offense did, so maybe BYU's improvement is, in part, playing a bad defensive team.

Last years team couldn't score points against the worst offense in the nation, East Carolina.  They're not a good defense, but they are better than East Carolina was last year.

Arizona is soft in the front seven.  BYU beat the crap out of those guys.

BYU benefited from a ridiculous failure of the officials to call holding on the long punt return down the sidelines early in the fourth quarter which I assume wasn't seen by the officials because two BYU players both had their arms around the Wildcat in a scrum. That failure of the officials to see it cost Zona's defense at least 40 yards and was instrumental in their getting a TD. But what else is new? BYU has always benefited from the divine intervention of Joseph Smith or the other guy.

To get serious for a moment, the Cougars were much more physical than when I saw them at times last year. Based on a very early sample, as much as I hate to admit it, they could be as good as SDSU this season.

Oh ffs, BYU dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and limited one of those most dynamic players in college football to 14 yards rushing.  Arizona had a punt bounce off their ankle and it went uncalled despite BYU recovering.  This stuff happens in every game.

My neighbor’s kid plays for BYU.  He told me about three weeks ago the coaching changes have really made a positive difference.  The team is focused and intense and working very hard.  He also thinks they have the talent to do things.  This is a very sharp kid so I’m going to go along with the premise that they are much improved.  Where that goes is the question?  They were so bad last year they lost to my Aggies so they only had room to go up.  I predict they will be 3-2 when they play USU in October and we will have only lost to MSU so it could be an interesting game.  It’s too bad we play in Provo instead of Logan.

End of the day regardless BYU still would be a better team for the MWC then SJSU

So would Rocky Mountain College. That's not a very high bar to clear.

In the annals of the strange, UNM actually beats that one this year. Punter Tyson Dyer is 26 and a Soph. The explanation is that he's an Aussie and last year was his first year in college (Palomar JC). Turns out the Aussie Rules Football player is a pretty good punter (avg 48.7 last night, long of 52). Go figure :P

I thought about addressing that ECU game in my previous post, but was tiring of typing on my phone.

Will  AZ have a winning record?  BYU tends to only beat P5 teams that end up with a bad record.

I'm guessing 6-6 at best, but probably sub .500 after the BYU loss. Sumlin usually starts out hot and then tanks later in the season. If they start out bad they could end up fighting ASU for the cellar in their division.

If both teams stay strong, BYU vs BSU will be an awesome game to attend! Who’s nuts do I have to fondle to get a free ticket to that game?

Collie had one of the best catches of the game (tip-drill grab) for a first down at a crucial moment. He also ran jet sweep for 13 yards for a first down. Not a huge game, but an important piece to the improved receive corps.

A lot of BYU fans were REALLY down on the 2018 home schedule. I've been beating this drum for a while, but the home schedule with Utah St. and Hawaii won't disappoint! Hawaii has looked good so far and brings some rivalry emotions and history. I haven't seen Utah St. play yet, but to take Michigan St. down to the wire on the road shows that the Aggies have game this year. Can't wait for early October!
