Volleyball 2018

MWC volleyball RPI is bad. Unless they start a tournament, it will always be a 1 bid league. I'm just happy the Bulldogs are relevant again. Two of the top 4 girls volleyball powers (for 2018) are within 5 minutes from campus. Lauren Netherby-Stool never bothered to recruit either of them. Winder is all up in their bizniss in the last 8 months. That alone should keep the Dogs relevant in the MWC.

The MWC was a 3-bid league two years ago (CSU, Boise, UNLV).  They had decent RPI's becuase of the out of conference schedules that they played.  A post-season tournament would make RPI's worse not better because of the schlub teams at the bottom of the MWC.

A lot of us on the board wish the MW had a championship tournament. If they did, I'd go for sue. I might even go watch the WAC volleyball championship tournament in Bakersfield this month, just to enjoy the whole tournament bracket vibe. I've been to college basketball and baseball tournaments and had a great time at both of them.

How often has the MWC been a multi-bid league in Volleyball?

A few years back, the MWC had 5 teams in the NCAA tournament (men's basketball) because for whatever reason RPI was in their favor. Outliers can happen. Historically, the MWC is a 1 bid league.

The MW was a multibid league every year from the start in 1999 through 2010, then again in 2012 and 2016.  It was a one bid league in 2011, 2013-2015 and 2017.

As for @Warbow.  Even as late as 2003, the Big West without Hawaii was able to earn six bids and had five in 2004. Surprised that Utah State and Idaho earned at-large bids before moving on.

Unfortunately, just like the MW it's now reduced to a 1-2 bid league.  The only outlier being three bids in 2013.

You have to beef up the OOC schedule and win some of those matches, then have a great conference run if you want to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.  CSU has been doing just that for years and theyre on the verge of going to their 24th straight NCAA Tourney.

Things have changed over the years. Now that the P-5 schools knows that there is money to be made in women’s volleyball they are pouring money into their programs to dominate the sport.

Which makes the WCC surge in recent years quite impressive.  It had six bids in 2012, four in 2014 (BYU national runner-ups) and three in 2015.  BYU joining has made the difference.  It's been two bids + every year since The Borg became one with The Church League

Rams sweep UNLV to clinch a share of the MWC title and earn the NCAA Auto Bid.

That clinches the outright title for CSU. Congrats to the Spartans on a fine win over a very good Fresno team.

UC Santa Barbara ends the year with back to back sweeps of Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.  17-11 overall, 9-7 in the BW represents a nine win improvment over 2017.

And perhaps, knocked Hawaii out of the NCAAs.

Gotta give credit where credit is due.  On a night where CSU celebrated an MWC Championship with their fans, New Mexico came into Moby and defeated the Rams 3-2, snapping a 45-match conference home winning streak.
