Craig Thompson says 13 football teams is an option. Yup, he sad it

Recommended Posts

This was from last week at media days but feel it is worth discussing regarding expansion. Craig Thompson was asked about membership and he first bloviates about how the Gonzaga talks got ahead of themselves (duh! you were the one that blabbed about it) but went on to say while expansion is sort of on hold he said a 12th basketball tea is a possibility as is going with 13 football members.

I wonder if he was hinting at maybe New Mexico State as an option because out West they are one of the few realistic options out West -- the other is UTEP.

There some what-ifs in the piece I wrote like Wichita and Gonzaga being in the league to make it a legit power league on the hardwood.

The real question is about this topic is if the Mountain West should just stay put, pursue a hoops-only team or go with a full member and go with a quirky 13-team football league.

He told me he was referring to BYU and leaving the door open for their return.

BYU is not an option for football.

As long as they are making what they are in football in their TV deal no chance. However, if it were a non-football option if the MW gets three total hoops-only teams which include Gonzaga then BYU and someone else like Grand Canyon or NMSU could join in to get to 14.

I'm guessing if BYU doesn't play football here we won't bring them back. The only exception would be if it were a package deal with the Zags coming for all sports.

That football deal is likely going to take a hit unless BYU turns things around real fast.  They are not bringing in ratings.

I could see BYU being left out on an island...........They almost lost Gonzaga but for a WCC cave in

I personally say NO BYU unless they bring all sports back to the MWC, and until that time the MWC should stop scheduling BYU, or at least stop scheduling BYU after September - BYU made their own choices & it's not the MWC responsibility to fill out the BYU schedule.........with NMSU out there, BYU can play them a home & home !!

If the Zags bail on the WCC, then BYU is stuck in a bad BB conference - St. Mary's & BYU aren't enough to carry a Zegless WCC very far

Like I said BYU opted for this, and it's not the MWC concern to help BYU in any form............Granted BYU FB is the only western option that is worth picking up, but I seriously don't see BYU's ego allowing them to come back to the MWC..........That time might come though when the Power players slam the door on BYU once and for all - Until that time, BYU holds out hope of landing in a power conference, once it's officially not happening, BYU will be forced to come to grips with reality ........of course with one more move to consolidate the power in a few conferences, the rest of us are basically minor league and left to scrounge for crumbs, so will it really matter if BYU comes back, or even folds up FB like some MWC teams might

Absolutely right.  BYU is getting the scheduling benefit of being in the MWC without bringing anything to the table.  They need to be treated as OOC during the OOC season, or join up for real.

What evidence do any of you have  that Byu has any interest in returning to what is now a lesser conf than the one they left? They don't and why would they with their worldwide tv network? And, more importantly , there would be a big backlash from some conf schools if Hair actually suggested it. Here in SD our AD is getting pushback from Aztec fans for scheduling those people, those cheaters. Their fans are beyond obnoxious.

I'd like to see BYU come back for FB only.  The only way I would be against it is if they wanted special concessions.

Like you said, they are the only team in the west worth adding.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think would be best to improve the conference, adding BYU football or dropping San Ho?
