Trump Picks Kavanaugh

Yes, he did steal it. It may have been politics, but it was wrong. Even if he got away with it. And because the Dems will do it next time is not really a great excuse.

Garland was a legitimate, well-qualified justice nomination. It was the Senate's duty to review the nomination and vote on it, as the Constitution instructs. The framers never meant advise and consent to be a political trump card.

The level at which I am tired of these arguments can't be understated. Are we really going to make it so that the only way a president can get a SCOTUS nominee confirmed is if their party controls the Senate, too? Apparently so.

And if that’s the case, then any time we are in an “election year” for either POTUS or Senate, then “the American people need to have a voice.” It’s f’in bonkers!!

Also, I am still waiting for an explanation as to how "as conservative as possible" has a monopoly on constitutionality, how that will protect us from effectively constitutional but terrible idea reforms that the socialist wing of the democratic party wants, and why the current court wouldn't vote down what unconstitutional things they'd propose anyway.

Seeing as I never said that, you'll be waiting a while.

But do continue to jump to ridiculous conclusions and get yourself all worked up.  It's cheap entertainment.

You've said you want as conservative a court as possible. You've said you want constructionist judges. You've said you want that court because you fear the socialist wing of the democratic party will hijack that party, as opposed to the current court.

How have you never said those things? Are you an akkula who doesn't even understand the consequences of his opinions?

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

What part of any of that suggests I said that conservatives "have a monopoly constitutionality"?

  • You like strict constructionists
  • You're worried about extreme liberals eroding civil liberties
  • That's, uh, kind of the entire point of the supreme court in the first place

Kavanaugh is a great pick, and I think he will end up being a fair SC Justice.   He won't go in with some agenda to get done.

Dems have overplayed their hand here by starting to protest before even knowing who it was going to be.  It may help them with their hardcore base but will hurt them otherwise.

Trump could pick Jesus and they'd complain.

There is no reason Kavanaugh shouldn't be confirmed.

Yes, I completely agree.  I just think Democrats need to use the same "political power" when they have it instead of universally disarming.  It is like nobody remembers the game theory.  We are suckers if we always "cooperate" and get our lunch handed to us.  The first thing democrats need to do is get rid of the legislative filibuster and pass all of the things that have needed to be done and let the Republicans roll them back when the pendulum swings again.

Cooperate my ass. You clowns pushed Obama Care through with zero Rep support, or the support of the people. Dems play hardball a hell of a lot more ruthlessly than Reps.

They probably would, what with his lack of judicial experience and the fact that he's been dead for 2,000 years.

They did that.  Right after Obama promised complete transparency.  He even said they'd put it all on C-span.  Instead, they held closed door meetings where republicans weren't even allowed in the room.

Imagine the outcry and outrage if Trump pulled something as blatantly dishonest as that.

I’m glad to see that we finally have a president that knows how to play hardball with the Democrats. The Democrats have been the masters of ruthless politics for decades, in particular the last decade. The Republicans have finally learned that lesson from the Dems and they don’t like it. Trump is the poster boy for fighting fire with fire.

I'd like to see the list. If Kavanaugh was the only one on Kennedy's list that made Trump's shortlist, it would still appear transactional.

A republican president isn’t going to willfully choose a super liberal judge. As an independent that leans left of middle I’m not up in arms on who Trump chose, from what I’ve read he seems like a very well respected judge. I personally hope he can take the place of Kennedy and be a moderate judge and be the swing vote but only time will tell.

I can understand some liberal outrage in that Garland never even got a chance after being nominated, I hate stall tactics, I hate that people have suggested going to 11 judges etc. Garland should have gotten a chance to be confirmed and so should Trumps new nomination.

This is spot on.

No way. She's 2,000 years old but still alive.

Is she really though?

I mean, even in recent past, one could make the argument, and probably succeed in making it, that Ronald Reagan was dead his 2nd term and they propped him up with a stick. So there is precedent for such things.
