Menzies on the hot seat?

Recommended Posts

interesting.

UNLV is hiring Tubby Smith's top recruiter, Joe Esposito.

he was the only one on Tubby's staff worth a damn.

he single-handedly recruited Jamal Johnson and Myreon Jones to Memphis...

I'm surprised they kept that bullshit position they created to babysit the riceballs out of control players.  Remember they created the position and brought Max Good in for $100k just to babysit.  The position was not allowed to do any coaching from the sideline.  I don't know what legitimate coaching he can do.  Waste of money really.

I'm sure it will be hot garbage. Menzies is just trying to rack up wins by feasting on cupcakes. I hope that philosophy changes soon.

As for MM being on the hot seat, not yet. I think he has at least 2 more years to make the tourney. Maybe 3.

As for my expectations, I think UNLV should be in a position to make the NCAA tourney 2 out of every three years. What they do in there is gravy. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect UNLV to be in a position to get into the tournament most years. That means beefing up the OOC and winning some games there.

I have already said I don't think Menzies is the long-term solution. I just don't think he is a good enough coach. But I do think he can rebuild the foundation for a good coach to improve upon. My guess is he will be gone in three years, but will leave us a pretty good program. Then it is up to the AD to hire an up and comer. I doubt we will ever have the money for a stud HC.

I don't see MM making it past a third year unless he shows some legit improvement.  Hamilton will help but, beyond that if he starts Clyburn we won't be seeing much.  I'm hoping DRF removes him after year three.  With the projects he has brought in it's a waste of time to give him 4 or 5 more years.  The projects will only take you so far and he won't be around to see them develop in 4 or 5 years.

The position can actually be beneficial.  In particular when it comes to scouting, pre-game preparation, overall in-game strategy.

The problem with this hire though is Esposito’s main strength is recruiting.  Unless the rules surrounding the position have changed, I don’t think they have, he won’t be able to contribute in his primary area.  Makes this a strange hire to say the least if he stays in this role.

These two changes as of now haven’t strengthened the staff which isn’t encouraging for an already questionable situation.

We all know this guy will recruit up to a point. He has relationships with players and decision makers that will probably open doors for the staff.

If hes able to scout and foster relationships, hes perfect for the spot. Theres no telling what players hes already in with.
