MLB in Vegas?

Do you guys think Vegas should build a dome? I'm not sure all that time in the heat all summer attracts anyone, though I guess Arizona is open air?

If Vegas wanted to attract an MLB franchise, they'd have to build a retractable dome. As @retrofade mentioned earlier, moving the Rays out of Tampa would make the most sense. The "Trop" has got to be the most depressing venue in all of North American professional sports and Tampa's fan support is completely bandwagon. Hell, when the Red Sox and Yankees play there, it's like a home game for them.

Chase Field is a retractable roof stadium, and it's closed most of the time.

If Charlotte doesn't get an expansion team, then there's been talk that they could end up luring the Rays there instead.

Vegas could also be a potential relocation scenario for the A's. How much would Oakland hate Vegas if they ended up taking two of their pro sports franchises?

I've mentioned this before, it's hard to believe the Trop opened in the 80's. It is one of the 10 oldest stadiums in the league! For the most recent expansion team!

IDK if an MLB stadium fits the Las Vegas tourism model.

T-Mobile filled the Arena void.

And the football stadium is just what the doctor ordered for mega events like Super Bowl, Wrestlemania (not kidding, it's an economic windfall on same level as SB) and UNLV home football games vs. San José State.

I would think baseball would work way better than football for Vegas.  With 82 regular season home games that is a whole lot more visitors created than 8 NFL home dates.  I would think the casinos would be drooling over all those sports fans combining a vegas trip with their home teams games.

The dodgers attracted 3.77 million fans last year.

The Dallas Cowboys didn't even get 800K home attendance.

No baseball won't work better than football in Vegas.  The revenue models of MLB vs NFL are different.  MLB in Vegas would last no more than ten years before it moved.

MLB would be a bad fit. Vegas lacks the secondary TV markets that would make its regional TV contracts, a huge revenue driver for baseball, particularly lucrative. For comparison, Portland is No. 22 in TV market size. Vegas is No. 42, and would be by far the smallest TV market with baseball.

Edit: Looking at 2017 Nielsen rankings, PDX is No. 25 with 1.14 million TV homes; Vegas No. 40. with 750,000 homes. So Portland’s market is about 50 percent larger.

The casinos and resorts aren't really big on guests who stay in their rooms and leave the property for other events. They almost grudgingly offer comp tix to outside events for high rollers who ask for them. I wouldn't count on a huge amount of support other than the boilerplate, polite "community partner" support they'll show...

I think a good comparison for professional sports for Vegas is Phoenix (albeit to a lesser degree)

Clearly Phoenix attracts a lot of retirees with disposable income, without that segment AZ's population is half their current size and most likely doesn't have the Diamondbacks, Coyotes or Cardinals.  The Coyotes are a financial disaster, the league had to take over that franchise after it went bankrupt.  The D-Backs are okay, but they have attendance problems.

I think Vegas also attracts a lot of oldsters, but is about 1/3rd the size of Phoenix.  I'm not sure baseball works in Las Vegas.

MLB won't work in Las Vegas at the moment.   They'd have to build an indoor stadium, and they just barely got the money to build the Raider's new stadium.  Plus, I don't think Las Vegas has the money to fund a competitive MLB team.   I also have to think the California teams would strongly oppose it.   The Dodgers and Angels seem to have a claim on Las Vegas.  Maybe somewhat the Padres.

What would be hugely popular in Las Vegas is an NBA team.   They already have the arena.   It would enjoy huge fan support.

Keep a close watch on the New Orleans Pelicans, who need a new arena, and have an unstable ownership situation.

Plus, New Orleans seemed to lose a lot of population after Hurricane Katrina.

Don't be surprised if they move to Las Vegas or Seattle (Seattle will probably get priority over Las Vegas).

The Pelicans are staying in New Orleans, but for how long?

Two men kept pro basketball in Louisiana. One retired, and the other has passed away. What’s next for the Pelicans?

Yeah, I could see the pelicans here. But they would be flamingos. Pink ones. :D

I really want Portland to get an expansion team, and then to have Boise fall under their media distribution area. I would then be able to stream the Mariners on MLB.tv.

Or the games would be blacked out. See Giants on MLB Network. Viewing MLB baseball is a nightmare.

I don't see it.  Las Vegas has great potential as a AAA city, especially with the opening of the 10,000 seat Las Vegas Ballpark out next to the Downtown Summerlin and the Golden Knights practice facility.  That location during summer is typically 8-10 degrees cooler than the downtown location where the current Cashman Field AAA park is (due to the elevation difference between 2000' and 4000' https://www.reviewjournal.com/uncategorized/summerlin-rests-on-higher-ground/).  Also a huge chunk of Clark County's population of 300,000 retired people live within a four mile radius of that location.

Cashman Field is the most outdated ballpark in AAA, and probably the only one that doesn't have on-site exercise facilities for the teams.  The new stadium will be for several years the most advanced in AAA, hopefully attracting the Dodgers or Padres organizations back, or maybe even the Angels.  Right now Las Vegas has the Mets' AAA team, but the Mets bought the Syracuse AAA team and will be moving there.

As a Dodger fan I would love for them to have their AAA team back in Vegas, but there is no way that will happen. The Dodgers actually own their AAA team (OKC Dodgers), so I doubt they give up ownership of that franchise to affiliate with LV. It’s a shame though because it would be a perfect match.

Mariners are my team and the only way to watch their games (as far as I know) is to have a cable or Satellite subscription. I cut the chord a couple of years ago. I can stream all the other teams just fine on MLB.tv

If baseball does expand I hope that the plans for the current baseball stadium they want to build in Boise is set up to accommodate a AAA team that might want to come here. that would be fun, but there is loud opposition for public money going towards a new baseballs stadium in Boise.

They actually throw pink flamingos at the Knights games. But I like that one ^  ^ ^. Just put them on black uniforms, or even white ones. :P
