If no MVC/MWC Challenge.. Is a WCC/MWC Challenge on the Horizon??

Recommended Posts

With Gonzaga's decision to remain in the WCC, the MWC should do the next best thing and create a Challenge with the WCC.

Since many conferences are going to a 20-game schedule, a series with the WCC gives the MWC ready-made match-ups with a regional flare.

If the MWC dominates, the writing may be on the wall for the ZAGS to make a move.

Thompson can use a synergy between these two leagues to draw more spotlight away from the Pac12, perhaps even developing this series as a recruiting tool.

Make a trophy for the conference winner each year. Hype it to the max.

No. This is senseless. The bottom half of the WCC would be a horrible hit to the SOS of the MWC team. Additionally, having such a scheduling arrangement would likely improve the WCC SOS overall and thereby would make staying in the WCC even more palatable for Gonzaga (altho Gonzaga is not leaving the WCC anytime soon anyways).  Finally and most importantly, the MWC doesn’t need to be doing BYU any more favors.

Agreed OrediggerPoke. Nothing screams big time/ratings boon for UNM/ WYO basketball, than marquee matchups with Pepperdine and Pacific!

I think the two conferences play each other so much it wouldn’t work. Seems like it would be confusing determining which games were and weren’t a part of the challenge.

We aren't going to get a P5 conference to agree to a challenge with us, so we should target the best G5 for a challenge- AAC or A-10.  A-10 is too far away, so let's hit up the AAC.  Maybe Cincinnati will play us again!

I agree. An MW-AA challenge interests me the most. I’d like to see us put those uppity douche nozzles in their place.

A10 is most likely for the MWC. Both Mid Major conferences.

AAC is a High Major and wouldn't do a challenge with a mid major

How about the MW plays a challenge with the CUSA? It could be referred to as "The Alliance Challenge"

The CUSA is  a lot like the MWC, because you have that small group of teams at the top... and a lot of struggling teams at the bottom.

Perhaps these pairings

Nevada Plays WKU

SDSU Plays MTSU

Boise Plays UAB

UNM Plays ODU

CSU Plays UTEP

Wyoming Plays UTSA

UNLV Plays Marshall

Air Force Plays FAU

USU Plays FIU

Fresno State Plays La Tech

SJSU Plays Southern Miss

This is a very evenly matched set of games.

It wouldn’t help the RPI, so what would be the point?

The WCC and the MWC are often ranked at the same level with the MW slightly higher overall while Gonzaga is usually the highest non-Pac12 team in the West.  It would benefit both conferences RPI to schedule a challenge along these lines, especially to displace games against Big Sky and Big West teams that can lose to Division II schools and kill RPI.

In a related idea, there should also be a Big Sky/ Big West challenge.

MWC historically is much better top to bottom. After St. Mary's and Gonzaga that league is crap. Even in down years MWC is a much better RPI conference. The bottom half of the WCC is horrible and would kill the RPI of our middle of the pack teams. That would hurt the MWC overall during conference play. MVC or AAC are the only ones worth doing a challenge with the current NCAA makeup. The AAC makes the most sense having like schools across the board; however the MVC is a good fit also.

You mean like Bracketbusters when Gonzaga refused to participate in such an event beneath them?

There were in it the first year or two.

8 of the 11 MWC schools played games against the WCC; and several played multiple WCC teams. We basically already have a MWC/WCC challenge.

What history are we talking about here?  Surely not the last 5 years...

Conference RPI Rank:

2017-2018:  MWC - 9; WCC - 13

2016-2017:  WCC - 9; MWC - 10

2015-2016:  MWC - 11; WCC - 14

2014-2015:  WCC - 11; MWC - 13

2013-2014:  WCC - 9; MWC - 10

What would the WCC's RPI be w/o Gonzaga?

The WCC is a one team league. How often is the regular season or tourney champ a team other than Gonzaga?

Inconvenient truth...  Gonzaga IS in the WCC.  I could ask the same question about the MWC minus its top team each year but that's just silly.  How many times in the last few years has the MWC been anything but a one-team league?  I haven't seen multiple NCAA tournament bids out of this conference for a few years now without a MWC tournament upset.
