Our Healthcare System is Already Ruined

Single payer will just make wait times even worse.

Probably, because more people would have access to healthcare.

You want to improve the health care system, redesign cities so people have to walk a couple miles every day and tax sugar.

I’ll be curious to see the impacts of the sugar tax in Philadelphia. High fructose corn syrup might be the worst thing that’s in about every food product.

He's right though.  Finding a PCP let alone a specialist, can be daunting for a lot of people, depending on the plan they have via their company, and the availability of those doctors.  I've had some that were two and half months out before they'd see a new patient.  That's 75 days!

So much for "no wait times" in the vaunted US health industry.

SINGLE PAYER NOW!  SINGLE PAYER NOW!  SINGLE PAYER NOW!

(oh wait, I already have that via my company's plan!  At least I get to choose my physician - so long as they're in network!)

So you think that a single payer system with employed physicians without incentives to see patients in a country with physician shortages will result in shorter wait times. Interesting.

As far as high fructose corn syrup, you know that there is no evidence that HFCS is metabolized any differently than sucrose. Similar to GMOs, no evidence that there is any statistically significant difference of problems over non GMO foods.

I can get an  appointment in a day, two at most as long as I don't care which doctor I see. If I want to see "my" doctor, it may be 3 or 4 days. I also don't need to see a PC to get to a specialist. I just call one and make an appointment. Maybe a week or so.  Scripps is pretty damn good as far as I'm concerned. Obamacare increased my deductible from $200  to $2400 and my premiums went up about 30% but the care is still top notch.

Just because you give people insurance doesn't mean we have to take it.

Medical school is too expensive to train enough doctors. We are too fat and chronically sick to ever have enough doctors. It all starts with food.

You haven't watched any of the videos.  There's a net immigration surplus of doctors moving to Canada.  And as mentioned in the videos, there is no unhappiness among Canadian Doctors. So I don't know where you're obtaining your information, but it's not correct.

My comment on corn syrup was because Happy said tax sugar.  Corn syrup isn't sugar.  Taxing sugar wouldn't get you much.  Taxing corn syrup though...

That makes zero sense. Watch the videos.

It makes all the sense in the world.  Obamacare insured many more people, but people still didn't have access because medical providers didn't want to take more adults on poorly reimbursing plans in their practices.

I'm not talking about Canada. I'm referring to your assertion that "single payer now" would alleviate the 2 1/2 months you have to wait to see a doctor in the US. I don't know what information I have that is wrong. That there is a doctor shortage? The law of supply and demand would work against more available appointments if there is universal coverage.

As far as unhappy Canadians, I know plenty of happy Canadian doctors since moving to the US.

No unhappiness in Canadian doctors? None at all?

Doubt that. I do know that most Canadians are very happy with their system.

I think you correct that most canadians are happy with their system until they have a problem. Their expectations are different though. Most of the anecdotal dissatisfaction I hear are from Americans working in Canada that use their system. Things that Americans take for granted are difficult there like suing a doctor. Wait times for specialists and surgeries would not be acceptable here.https://globalnews.ca/news/3084366/q-a-how-long-are-medical-wait-times-in-canada-by-province-and-procedure/

The demographics of Canadians are also different in that the rate of obesity, diabetes and heart disease are significantly higher in the US so accessing care is less problematic. That said, I don't see any way we avoid developing a Canadian type system for us in the future. We're just going to have to reset our expectations.

High fructose is addicting though.  It’s way sweeter than natural sugar, and it hijacks your hunger signals.

Fructose is sweeter than table sugar but High fructose corn syrup can be as low as 45% to as high as 90% fructose used in candy. There isn't any evidence that it is more addicting than table sugar. There was one non peer reviewed poster presentation saying that sugar was more addictive than cocaine but few clinicians believe that but it did make the fake news circuit. HFCS is used more now because it's more stable in liquid form to sweeten sodas and processed foods than other forms of sugar.
