Penny is just tearing it up...since he agreed to become HC Memphis has snagged:

^ Tubby tried to land every one of em and struck out each time while Penny locked em down in like 2 weeks flat.

and he's currently working his magic in attempting a major coup with James Wiseman...if Penny steals him from Kentucky they'll have a total melt-down lol

Tubby Smith is a loser recruiter.  That’s why it didn’t work out for him in Memphis.  On top of that, he made excuses for why he couldn’t get anybody good.

I didn't believe you at first but I do now...each of these kids said they WANTED to play for us but Tubby just didn't show em the love. You don't have to put out that much effort to get Memphis kids to stay home and play for the Tigers but Tubby just refused to put in the work.

Old news for us... we talked about this back on the 13th. Word was he didn’t want to buy in on all the hard training/work coach Weir told him about and was expecting of him. One thine for sure about coach Weir’s teams... no one will be in better shape than his.

And with the Lobos signing Tavian Percy and Karim Ezzeddine, we got a pretty good lineup anyway!

Penny is still looking for an Assoc HC to handle the Xs and Os.

according to Parrish and the local paper final candidates are....

Sam Mitchell: Played for the Timberwolves and Pacers, Toronto Raptors Head Coach for just over 4 seasons leading them to two NBA Playoff appearances. 2007 NBA Coach of the Year. (60% chance)

Trent Johnson: Took Nevada and Stanford to Sweet 16s along with taking LSU to an NCAA tournament. 2009 SEC Coach of the Year. (30% chance)

and dark-horse candidate, Johnny Jones: Current Nevada Assoc HC along with being a former Memphis interim HC. He took North Texas to two NCAA tourneys and had a decent run at LSU. (10% chance)

Do Memphis and UNLV fans congregate together because their programs do the least with the greatest amount of talent in all of NCAA D1? I don't have a whole lot of confidence that Penny can successfully coach the talent he is able to pull in...the guy is a legend in Memphis and he deserves his shot...I just won't be surprised if he turns into the second coming of Dave Rice.

I've always felt a kinship with UNLV as we're both urban basketball schools that sucked at football. We got our act together in football but it happened at the detriment of our hoops program. That's why we gave Norvell a big raise to 2.6 million. We want to fix basketball while keeping football rolling.

let Tony Madlock take care of the day-to-day running of a college program as he has 20 years experience coaching college hoops (and was Ole Miss' interim HC last season). let Sam Mitchell coach Xs and Os (2007 NBA COY) along with recruiting connections. Mike Miller can recruit and is probably great at working with players individually. Penny can run practice, recruit, and do some floor coaching during games along with being the face of the program.

like with Calipari, as long as you recruit high talent kids, you can pretty much roll out the ball and win against lesser competition most of the time.

I don’t feel like I’ll learn much about Penny Hardaway as a coach until conference play.  Teams can win in non-conference play by simply being more talented.  In conference play, absolutely abysmal teams can beat good teams because they have a lot of scouting opportunities.  In the 2014-15 season, we beat Arizona and lost to Reno.

It also just happens to work out that the AAC tourney is in Memphis this season.

Penny inherits the 3 best players from last seasons squad who happen to all be Seniors in: Martin (18.9 ppg), Davenport (13.3 ppg), and Brewton (9.1 ppg) to go along with all the talented new kids I mentioned above.

in theory they have a good blend of experience and talent that could take them past last seasons 21 win mark.

I don’t know if they’ll hit 20 wins in year one.  I’ll definitely be rooting for them.  College basketball is better when Memphis is good.  As you’ve said before, we need a home and home with each other.
