NLI Signing Day - Wednesday, Feb 7th

Recommended Posts

While most of the teams in the MWC already have most of their players signed, UNLV fans are having to wait until NLI signing day for the final tally.  The Rebels enter the day ranked about 8th in the MWC for recruiting class but should move up several spots depending on if they get any of these key recruiting targets:

  • WR John Jackson III (deciding between UNLV, USC, Nebraska, UCLA, and Oregon)
  • OL (6-foot-5, 318-pound) Hunter Mayginnes - had his ASU offer revoked last month when he visited UCLA
  • LB Malakai Salu (supposedly silently committed after his UNLV OV, but has not yet publicly committed)
  • LB Omari Harris, decommitted from Cal, had Nebraska and Utah offers

Yes, I know there is a separate recruiting forum, and that the main MWC board is more for topics like brothels, the AAC, and BYU haircuts, but I'm really looking forward to NLI signing day and am inserting my post from the recruiting forum over here (above).  I invite others to chime in with any decisions that their schools are waiting for on NLISD, as well as comments on how your incoming class rounds out.

Again, I apologize for posting on the main board with a topic that doesn't involve Craig Thompson, trolling, doxing, or boycotting the Super Bowl... so please remind me again that there is a recruiting forum.

Meanwhile, here are the MWC '18 class scores as of Feb 6th (and it's interesting to note that the "SEC Mountain" is entering NLISD with the bottom 4 teams and the top 2 teams):

Signing day threads are appropriate on the sports forum.  How else would we know who to crown as off-season recruiting champs?

USU, Wyo, UNM, and AFA are almost always at/near the bottom of the rankings... what's the West's excuse?

Boise State had a signing day surprise in 4**** TE Tyniel Hopper. Offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, and others. He made that four 4**** in this class, which is only two less than Harsin signed in the last four classes combined.

I know it is common occurence to tout the current class as the best ever, but by almost any measure one could use, this is Boise's best class (on paper) in school history.

Hawaii loses out to UVA for Aaron Faumui after they had a last minute push over the weekend...though we did gain a surprise LOI from 3* WR, Mike Washington who is perfect for the RnS with his speed.

Rolo focused on the OL/DL in this signing period with a majority being players in the trenches. The class overall looks good, very disappointed about losing Faumui though...

A few notes: Boise, CSU, SDSU end up 1, 2, 3 for the second year in a row. Third straight year that CSU has finished 2nd to Boise. UNR the biggest surprise as they finish 4th, just barely behind CSU, and SDSU. Fresno probably the biggest disappointment coming off a big year. I figured Tedford would bring in a good class. The 24.88 composite points Boise finished ahead of 2nd place CSU is by far the largest gap between 1st and 2nd in the MW since Boise joined. Boise has signed the highest ranked class every year since joining the MW.

Pokes are killing it at recruiting!

Wyoming's classes and AFA's classes are always underrated by the recruiting services. In contrast, JC players are always overrated. So . . .

THE abysmal class is UNM's. TEN - count 'em TEN - JC commits and yet the Lobos class is still poorly rated. Prediction: Two years from now UNM will become what SJSU was in 2017 and unless Davie is shown the door, it won't get better.

Boom goes the dynamite.

The above link shows 247Sports class rankings and with Hopper BSU is up past 182, which is already 15 over the Bronco's 2017 class.  It will take a while for that site to catch up on new commitments.

Rankings are also skewed by number of commits. To me, that's silly but it is what it is. And what it is this year is a way to make UNR's good class look better than it is.

I agree that Fresno's class, although pretty good, is disappointing coming off such an excellent season. Quite odd but maybe there's an explanation we haven't heard?

Those three schools probably will remain 1-2-3 but there are a lot more players that should be added today, particularly for UNM, Wyo, USU, and UNLV.

UNLV has 7 new signees already today and are waiting for John Jackson's announcement at 1:40.

The Rebels "biggest" target (Mayginnes, 6'5 320lb) isn't going to announce this week.

1. small class numbers-wise

2. we got most of our guys early on and they never got re-rated because they were vocal about being solid to fresno and no p5 schools came sniffing by, at least publicly.

I think Wooldridge and Wright are reaches (we had to reach for wright, his old man played for us) but the rest are high MWC/p5 tier guys, and Carson i know for a fact would have been a 4* and gotten huge offers had he not gotten injured in his first game of his senior year - he still had an offer from Oregon despite the injury.     Similar thing with Clive Truschel (2017 greyshirt) who nearly died of a spinal salmonella infection  (yeah i guess that can happen).     The fact that we're getting kilifi leaatoa to greyshirt is nothing short of astounding to me...i get that he's a bit short for a linebacker (i don't believe he's 6-1)  but he's an insane athlete.  Hell, Dumais might be greyshirting too, which is just ridiculous.

Good point on #2 as I've seen that with SDSU. You have a kid who wants to commit somewhere early because doesn't want to have his senior season interrupted by recruiting stuff. He takes a couple OVs, likes your school a lot and sees it as a good fit and so verbals and then when he blows up his senior year and P5s start contacting him, he tells them not to bother recruiting him so they never offer. Then when signing day comes around the services don't rate him as highly as would have otherwise been the case. If the services really had their shyte together, their ratings would control for such kids.

Boom goes the dynamite.

It could be argued he got a late start but I'll bet ignorance of the process and maybe also lack of enthusiasm for it also played a part in that.

Some Aztecs love Herm as an alumnus. I'm not one of them.
