MWC Baseball 2018 Edition

Recommended Posts

Yes it is that time of year. Baseball season starts a week from Friday. This year's postseason tournament will be held in San Diego at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Since 2011 the winner of the postseason tournament has either been San Diego St or New Mexico. Will a new team push through to win the tournament this year? Who is going to win the regular season title? Will MWC get more than one team into the dance? Moderators can pin if they like. So here we go:

February 16th:

Air Force @ Hawaii                                          New Mexico vs. Oregon St

Michigan St @ Fresno St                                 UCSB @ San Diego St

Indiana St @ UNLV                                          N. Colorado @ San Jose St

Nevada @ UC-Irvine

February 17th:

Air Force @ Hawaii                                          Cal Poly vs. New Mexico

Michigan St @ Fresno St (2)                         UCSB @ San Diego St

Oregon @ UNLV                                               N. Colorado @ San Jose St (2)

Nevada @ UC-Irvine

February 18th:

Air Force @ Hawaii                                          Gonzaga vs. New Mexico

Michigan St @ Fresno St                               UCSB @ San Diego St

Loyola MM @ UNLV                                       N. Colorado @ San Jose St

Nevada @ UC-Irvine

Coastal Carolina, UCSB and Miami are three teams looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2017.  After advancing to the College World Series in 2016 (Coastal won the national championship), they all missed the NCAA Tournament in 2017.  That snapped a 43 year run for Miami and Coastal missed out on the chance to defend their crown.

The BW has been a 2-3 bid league recently and has sent a representative to Omaha each of the last four years.  Will that streak continue?  And will someone dethrone CSUF?  We shall see.

ESPN will be broadcasting 153 regular season games and five conference championship games across all their networks.  The American, ACC, Big South, SWAC and SEC championship games will all be televised.

TCU has five games on ESPNU.  Long Beach State has two.  The random WTF game is Gonzaga at BYU on March 22nd.

450+ games will be streamed on the ESPN App.

The NCAA decided to seed all 16 regional hosts for the Tournament.  Whoever wins their respective regional will become that national seed for the Super Regionals.  #1 will play #16,  #2 vs #15 and so on.  If this had been in effect in 2017, Davidson would have hosted Texas A&M in the Super Regionals

Boise State is building an on-campus stadium this spring (turf color still TBD).

Coach Gary Van Tol is planning on bringing in 6 or so freshman in this recruiting class that will red-shirt 2018-2019. Games won't begin until the following season (2020).  So he'll have to bring in quite a few JUCO players and graduate-transfers in 2019-2020 to be ready for play that first season.

Would be nice to see Boise St. play here at Peccole Park.

Lots of stairways.

Its coming, however they have played Boise St in baseball before, believe it was at Moana Stadium though before they built Peccole

No offense to Boise joining, but I liked the odd number of conference teams which opened up the schedule for a good OOC series in the middle of the season with other odd-numbered conferences. That’s how we got a series with Clemson last May.

On the flip side though, it could be a pain in the butt for the coaches to schedule those games later in the season then if you can't put something together you have to take that weekend off which could lose your momentum. To me having an even number of teams in the conference for baseball would mean less headaches for scheduling for coaches.

Pretty much a 5 Team race from looking at that. Going to be fun.

looks like it even though only San Diego St and New Mexico have won the automatic bid for MWC since 07 I believe. After having one its worst seasons in history on the baseball side, Nevada has nowhere to go but up. For me I would have probably voted San Diego St and New Mexico as the favorites.
