Government Shutdown 2018

Recommended Posts

"Republicans control the House, they control the Senate and they control the presidency," Vermont Sen. Pat Leahy told CNN on Tuesday. "The government stays open if they want it to stay open and shuts down if they want it to shut down." Yes, Leahy is a Democrat. But, smart Republicans know he's absolutely right.
It's why Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has repeatedly said -- in the face of these shutdown showdowns -- that "there's not going to be a government shutdown. It's just not going to happen." It's why Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, told The New York Times that "to believe that you can successfully blame Democrats for a shutdown over the DACA debate is naive."

They should pass the bipartisan DACA deal and put in on Trump's desk. Do that and they'll definitely have the votes to keep the government running.

They should pass the bipartisan DACA deal and put in on Trump's desk. Even an overwhelming number of Trumpists support it. Do that and they'll definitely have the votes to keep the government running.

Facts.

  • This is (or will be soon) the first shutdown in United States history when one party has complete control over both houses of Congress and the presidency. (Seriously. Look it up before you complain about Democrats being obstructionists.)
  • Trump promised (or at least strongly hinted), on camera, to sign any deal that the two parties put in front of him. So empowered, those two parties put together a bipartisan compromise and presented it to Trump.
  • He rejected the bipartisan compromise and started "shithole" gate.
  • Trump ended the protections for Dreamers that existed under Obama. Like so many other things, this is a crisis of his own making.

These are not opinions or spin. All of these are things that happened that lead us here.

Now here is some opinion to go with it. Trump himself has said he is in favor of protecting Dreamers (which again, he was the one who put in danger). The two parties are arguing on how many concessions Democrats will have to give in order for Trump to resolve a situation he himself caused and protect a group of people he himself says he wants to protect (after taking away their protections that they had under his predecessor.)

Or, to put it more bluntly. How much will Democrats give him in order to graciously be allowed to help him undo his own screwup?

Come on man you are smarter than that.

Ryan has brought the freedom caucus in line with a clean CR that keeps the government open until Feb 16th. Outlook for the bill in the Senate is not good if the reports are true that the Dems have enough no’s to shoot it down.

We’re all sitting in the dugout. Thinking we should pitch. How you gonna throw a shutout when all you do is bitch.

You facts are not facts.

1. How did Trump start shithole gate when what he said was in a private meeting? He didn't run to the press and leak it. The dems used it as a wedge.

2. The protections for DACA and DAPA are unconstitutional. It never should have happened in the first place. Like so many other things(budget, North Korea, immigration) this can has been kicked down the road for years and Trump is now trying to find a solution. That is not of his making.

3. He rejected a compromise that had none of the items he asked for. They didn't give him anything of what he wanted so why would he agree to it?

DACA and dreamers are not the same thing. Dems are mixing the 2 and that is just wrong. The reasons we are here is because 1. Obama made an unconstitutional EO concerning DACA. 2. Obama promised comprehensive immigration reform in his FIRST term. Never happened.
