The Hawaii Bowl had its largest TV audience in several years last weekend. It was the most watched cable programming on Christmas Eve.

This year's Hawaii Bowl with Fresno State vs Houston was seen by 2.09 million viewers. That is the largest TV audience for the bowl since 2013's Boise State vs P5 Oregon State

It definitely helped that it landed on Sunday. And on Christmas Eve Sunday. Many people were home and thirsty for football.

It has been a Christmas Eve game since 2008. Being a Sunday may have helped. But the last time the game was a Sunday for Christmas Eve was Dec 24, 2011. That year it was Nevada vs Southern Miss. The 2011 viewership was 2.44 million.

Ratings for the Hawaii Bowl have been on a downward trend the last few years until this game. Previous Hawaii Bowl cable viewership:

  • 2017 - 2.09 million
  • 2016 - 1.4 million
  • 2015 - 1.6 million
  • 2014 - 1.9 million
  • 2013 - 2.7 million
  • 2012 - 2.4 million
  • 2011 - 2.44 million
  • 2010 - 3.7 million
  • 2009 - 2.9 million

Yes it has. It appears that people are used to football on Sundays. That's a late game for most that day.  No late NFL games on Xmas Eve Sunday equaled more eyeballs for the pineapple bowl. Good for the bowl, the teams and conferences.
