Returning Starters for 2018

Recommended Posts

The MW is actually returning a lot of starters next year.  Hopefully that translates into more OOC wins against decent teams.  Collectively we return 165 starters and lose just 99.  On offense we return 83 starters and lose just 49.  On Defense we return 82 starters and lose 49.

I took the most recent depth charts from Ourlads for each team.  Some were from bowls and some from final regular season games.  Admittedly, these won't be 100% correct because of injuries, Sr's getting the start in the bowl/final game over a Jr or So, etc.  Let me know where things are incorrect and I will correct and try to get a solid list down.

Fresno's is accurate.   Word is Wylan Free and Chris Gaston (CSU fans might recognize the name) tore up bowl practices, so there is an outside chance Tank Kelly loses his spot as the #2 starting CB given he'll be injured going into spring and those two will have plenty of reps. though i was pretty impressed with Tank's play at CB to close out the year.  Secondary will be very deep next year.

Odds are Da'Mari Scott's WR spot gets filled in part by Oklahoma transfer Michiah Quick.  The center spot will probably go to Cal transfer Markus Boyer, who spotted Mitchell this year at times and came in as a 6th OL on occasion.   I expect the RT spot to go to very talented current true freshman Syrus Tuitele, whose redshirt we burned this year for unfathomable reasons. Juco OL Nick Abbs will be his main competition.

Forrester's tackle spot i think goes to 2017 rotational player Keiti Iakopo once he's had a full offseason of S&C.  Forrester was a beast, we'll miss him.  The end spots are up in the air...i think Kwami Jones gets one and current true frosh Damien DeGruy gets the other. DeGruy is a stud.   Really needs some time in the weight room but he's athletic as hell and has a motor.

One small change, Crumbie is declaring for the draft (he won’t get drafted but he doesn’t have a choice really).  Our loses on defense don’t concern me that much.  We will miss Demps at WR next year.

Pretty close. Our starting RB returning is Tyrone Owens (Jr) who already has a thousand yard season. And our starting RT will be Estrella (So) who was injured, our starting LT may be Saltes (Fr) who was our starting RT before knee injury (if we don't move him back to DE). Aaron Jenkins is our starting RG.

2-3 RB's who didn't start, but saw the field a lot the-last-season-or-two we becoming back in 2018.

Perez hasn’t been a factor since his freshman year.  Bum shoulder took out 70 percent of his career. Boise returns 10 on defense and all 8 DL who rotated heavily.

As long as Rypien has someone to throw to we should be 10-2 type team. Maybe 11-1.

Yeah, I think they listed him as a starter because he's had such an injury riddled career and he was a SR. He was rarely the guy who trotted out on the first play of the game. Seven of the games he didn't record a statistic and two more he had one tackle in blowouts. He ended 19th in total tackles (14 tkl) contributing two TFL. Whereas the two FR that rotated into his position had 60 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 6 pass break ups, 3 FF, an INT, and 2 defensive TDs. It would be misleading to include Perez as a lost starter when they return almost all of the production from that position.

I’m guessing some chance we lose Allison after his junior year.

He needs to drop a bit of weight, he's a mauler but i'm not sure he can cover in space at the NFL level right now.

I like who the Aztecs have coming back. Lot of depth behind them too.

Our losing a physically talented but knuckleheaded NT like Sergio Phillips could actually help if in the next five weeks we sign one of the guys rumored on ASR to be coming.

However, we will definitely miss Henderson, Lomax and Kelly. I wouldn't have thought Henderson so much because of our depth at LB but he was the only one of those guys who accomplished anything in the Armed Forces Bowl. Hopefully Cassidy, Lakalaka and Tezino were all embarrassed enough by their play that it motivates them to bust their butts over the next eight months.

Boom goes the dynamite.

Losing Penny hurts too. He's been the best back you've had at SDSU in awhile. SDSU is uniquely capable of producing another quality back. Do you think the guy behind Penny is as good as him? Also, you need a new QB. Any candidates there?

Who’s gonna run your offense?  You guys had no running game and now no Elway Jr. Seems your offense will struggle mightily next year.

No way is Juwan Washington even close to Penny. That's not to say he isn't a quality back but Penny is likely to go in the second round in April whereas Washington probably won't even be drafted in 2019. Rocky hasn't said so but I think it will be RB by committee next year with redshirt soph Chase Jasmin getting almost as many carries as Washington and maybe the best back on the roster is this guy who redshirted in 2017: http://www.goaztecs.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/kaegun_williams_1052951.html

At QB, we have three guys behind Chapman and I'm not enthusiastic about any of them. As I said elsewhere, the staff is apparently considering bringing in a JC guy or a graduate senior transfer. I would rather it wasn't the latter since that would be just a one-year stopgap at best.

Boom goes the dynamite.
