If you donate $100K to the humane society, that's a deduction. Do you want the humane society to pay taxes on that $100K? Do you want to pay sales tax on that $100K if they name something after you because of it, therefore being a hypothetical tangible benefit. Can I run a tire store affiliated with a university and provide services in exchange for "donations"? If so, I might have a business idea for Boise State. There's nothing non-profit about athletic departments - even if they made all the money for their academic units (which they don't), it would be questionable.
