Wyobraska
Why would Miles willingly leave NU money? I don't see him leaving NU until he is fired and can get his buyout money.

Because Iowa was going to fire him at some point.

Tom Crean-start here and see if he's interested. If anything, just the idea of Crean contact will be good for the program. Truth be told, we don't have the money to pay him the 1.4-2 million it would likely take. The only way this would work would be if Crean wants a quick turnaround with the facilities, fan support, and weak conference necessary to win quickly and bounce in 2-3 years if successful. Unlikely, but you make the call. 2.) Mark Gottfried- Same basic concept as with Crean. He's still only 53 and might be able to use UNM to springboard a jump to one last shot at a power conference. Or it might appeal to him to try and build sort of a regional western power all the while golfing 300 days out of the year. Again, money would be the big issue. 3.) Lorenzo Romar-Great recruiter, mediocre coach. The appeal with Romar is that he would immediately bring in the caliber of recruits that UNM hasn't seen in years. Same basic issues apply. My guess is he winds up making 500K per year as a recruiting ace and associate for a P5 team like Arizona. 4.) Tim Miles-I think we're all familiar with Tim. Probably the most realistic hire of this category. Would stabilize the program and would likely be financially realistic. Probably the lowest ceiling, but a relatively high floor. Guys looking to move up from current conferences and would still get a reasonable pay bump. 1.) Kermit Davis-Middle Tennessee St. A guy who would probably stick around for a while and take the time to build the program correctly. Not a sexy hire, but a realistic possibility. 2.) Mike Davis, Texas Southern- similar scenario as above. He's done a nice job at Texas Southern with half the resources of UNM. 3.) Joe Dooley FGCU-Already smoke around this one. Good recruiter, from the Bill Self tree, excellent national contacts. I'm wary of an East Coast guy trying to make it work at a school like UNM. 4.) Steve Forbes, ETSU. Motivator, great speaker, recruited really well at big programs.Part of the Bruce Pearl controversy. Outside the box type possibilities aka highly unlikely 1.) James Borrego, assistant San Antonio Spurs. Local Albuquerque guy. Sort of a Mr. Albuquerque type (great HS player). Pop acolyte. would be an amazing Xs and Os hire. Super intelligent guy and highly effective leader. Cons obviously would be huge questions with recruiting and transition to dealing with kids. Lots of risk, but if he was a hit, could be the best coach in UNM history. 2.) Ryan Miller- I think Miller is going to be a great head coach, but my guess is UNM will move away from all things associated with Steve Alford. 3.) Reggie Theus-Just because his name always has to come up here. the good thing about Crean and Gottfried is Indiana and NC State will be augmenting their salaries for the next few seasons. example: Indiana will owe Tom Crean 4 million over three years but it's offset by whatever he makes at his next job. NM offers him a 5 year 5 million dollar contract (1 million per year) but for the next three seasons he would be making 1 million from NM and 333,333 from Indiana. 1.33+ million is pretty good pay to coach NM. It would also offer him a good landing spot with nice facilities in a decent hoops conference (top-10 RPI conference)

PTR
I'm not really big on UNM rushing to hire Tim Miles. We could do a lot worse, but if what we're hearing is true and 6-8 coaches and or their agents have contacted UNM (even before a formal search has begun), that tells me that UNM needs to do their due diligence here. We saw what a rushed emotional hire did to the program last time.

He will get other offers IMO that will pay more than UNM can afford. Tim Miles, on the other hand, was decent at CSU but not great and has now been competing against Big 10 competition for several years. That has to have made him a better coach. My uneducated guess is that Tim Miles is the frontrunner at this early stage. I guess I personally could live with him as the new Lobos coach. Lots of HC experience and hopefully some decent recruiting ties after his stint at NU. Quote ** “It’s a basic truth of the human condition that everybody lies. PTR
UNM isn't going to touch anyone connected to Steve Alford or Neal. That eliminates Miller right off the bat. Tommy Lloyd is a long-time assistant with no head-coaching experience. Another direction that I doubt UNM goes in. UNM will swing for the fences with a name hire. If they strike out, I think they will move on to an experienced head-coach moving up from a lower level. Part of the process needs to be an understanding to find someone who gets and will embrace the culture of the fan-base here. The average Lobo fans are >25, not a college graduate, working class, and have sort of a blue-collar mentality towards the team. Essentially, UNM basketball is the defacto professional team of the northern 2/3rds of New Mexico. Coaches that seem embrace and understand this tend to be either Westerners or Mid-Westerners with the ability to build a team culture around this mentality. We're never going to be a Stanford, Wisconsin-Madison, or even an SDSU with a student centered fanbase of 19-21-year-olds.
