If you didn't insist on San Jose being in the MWC, so you guys would have someone that votes similar to SDSU, every team in the MWC wouldn't have to play 2 games vs. a team with a 330 RPI ranking EVERY season. 4UNLV
Haven't read the entire thread, but UConn SHOULD be in the big east. They'll make more money there with their hoops than they would in the AAC through football. Their football will survive, either way, because for UConn, basketball drives ITS bus.

BacksThePack
Then maybe someone would care about their women's team. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one's around, does it make a sound? Pretty sure the lady huskies have proven no.

If UConn basketball was running things at UConn they'd already BE in the Big East. Football runs NCAA sports, right or wrong, no matter how much you basketball guys want to believe otherwise. The Big East got the great deal they did because they were in the right place at the right time and Fox needed winter/spring content for its new sports channel. They overpaid to get BE basketball so they wouldn't have to pay more for a G5 conference because they didn't need more fall content.

They've been enjoying NCAA tourney payments from the old big east. That will soon dry up. UConn has to be thinking about taking a major paycut if it doesn't join the Big East. This year each unit is worth approximately $260,800 and that is multiplied by units earned over the previous six seasons (2010-2015). So which conference received a $29.3-million check from the NCAA's $200-million basketball fund last spring? The American Athletic Conference which still has its offices a jump shot away from the Rhode Island State House. The American's take from the pot was the largest in the country, easily eclipsing the total earned by the Big 10 ($24.5 million) and the Big 12 ($20.1) The American's exorbitant take stems directly from a separation agreement negotiated in March 2013 with the seven basketball-first Big East schools. At the time, schools such as Connecticut, Cincinnati, Providence and Georgetown were all at the end of a turbulent three-year period dominated by an exodus of schools such as Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia to other conferences that offered a more lucrative home for their football programs. The American's take will gradually decrease as its legacy Big East units expire. Since the league was formed, the conference piled up 11 units in 2014 thanks to UConn's championship run, three units in 2015 and five units in last month's NCAA tourney. As a comparison, the Big East set a record with 24 units in 2009 and a nation-best 22 in 2011 and 23 in 2012. http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/20160409/big-east-basketball-not-among-top-money-makers

From what I understand that will also run out over time.

Their basketball recruiting started to struggle when the C7 left. The blue chippers don't want to play in the AAC. I think UConn has AAU status as well so that should make the BE happy. However, they better hope the toned down Patriot League conference will take their football. If they have to go independent they might drop it since it would be a money losing albatross. If the top priority is athletic department profits, there are a lot of schools which would benefit from dropping football altogether if they have no chance of ever getting promoted to a power conference because that sport is always going to be a losing proposition monetarily. However, other than most of the Big East schools, Gonzaga and a handful of others with great men's basketball, how any schools have any recognition athletically without having an FBS football program? CSU Fullerton does here in California but how many sports fans outside California ever think of CSUF despite its excellent baseball? Damn few. Quote Boom goes the dynamite. I think we will see lots of schools dropping football altogether in the next decade unless booster support is willing to pay pretty much the entire cost. State funding isn't there... can't get much more out of the students... TV money drying up... attendance down... locked out of the money bowls... full cost of attendance/training table... Some schools don't really care much about "recognition athletically" anyway. It really doesn't move the needle, application/enrollment-wise, if you can't make deep tourney runs or are a G5 football program. Some programs will keep FB alive because their community will demand it and be willing to pay for it. It's a source of community pride beyond the University (I'd think Boise, UNR, SDSU, AFA, CSU, WYO, Hawaii, Fresno, USU fit in here... not real sure about UNM or UNLV... Hoser no).
