Bleymaier "Fired" as SJSU's AD

Recommended Posts

That's a tough gig to truly succeed at and Gene should get credit for Woj in hoops but he's really past his prime as an AD IMO.   The 80's were his heyday and the things are very different now.   In the days of 1AA all Gene had to do was focus on 5-6 rich families and his fundraising was done.   And he had someone else do that job anyway.

Truth is he guided the football program, always a big time winning program at every level, into D1.  He was a football man from the start but he's not a program builder/rebuilder.  He fought Hawkins on the indoor facility (did not support it) and fought sky boxes, stadium expansion when he had Petersen here.   He's an ultra conservative spender and that dominates his planning.   Risks have to be taken sometimes and he's not comfortable with that at all.

Good man, hard worker.  Earned his retirement.

She was given a post AD job so she'll stick around at UNLV to continue being active at cocktail parties.

I do wish we had SJSU's president, guy isn't messing around and that's the kind of leadership needed at unlv. Hopefully Jessup takes a hike and heads back to Arizona soon.

The president's name is Mary Papazian.

I think what it boiled down to is Bleymaier just wasn't a fundraiser.  SJSU has a long athletic history so he should have reached out to boosters and befriended them.  Not just one or two.  They have a lot of prominent alumni who're still alive.   It's typical for CSU presidents to not enthusiastically support athletics so it's up to the AD to raise money to get things done.

A rational response.  Thank you.

You have to wonder, if a man who brought Boise to prominence can't do anything at SJSU, who can?

He held Boise back.

He made numerous bad coaching hires.  He build nothing in 3 times the length of tenure of Smith who was AD before him.  He destroyed several programs including Basketball.

Bleymaier had one good idea in 30 years.  He couldn't raise any money and it was there to be had.  He was horrible at hiring coaches.   He just wasn't a leader.

I was glad when he was fired.

Bleymaier's demotion only a couple months after the firing of Ron Caragher is implicit notification by SJSU's administration to its fan base that Dick Vermiel is now unofficially persona non grata at the school. Finally. And good riddance.

It also shows that the new prez has considerably larger testes than her predecessor. Figuratively speaking.

I like it. Let's hope she can hire someone who moves things forward.

Gene can move things forward. He believes in Brennan and in the community. Brennan will lead the football team to new heights. And Go Broncos.

Or this is a prelude to admitting defeat and stepping down a few divisions......
