av-rated
Only surprise here to me is UCONN...I already knew Fresno and Boise owned the 'players in the league' stat over a large number of P5 teams.

Don't forget prior to 2011 Baylor was competing annually and often winning with KU and ISU for dead last in the Big XII. From 1996 thru 2009 Baylor went 43 - 110. Eleven of those seasons with no or only 1 conference win and never more than 3 conference wins in a season. Before 2011 Baylor hadn't finished in the AP top 25 since 1986. Coach Briles resurrected that program from nothing in a relative hurry. Had Briles stayed at Baylor would they have put more players into the NFL or prison? Oh wait that's why he lost his job, no one was held to account....never mind.

pesik
i have always said using draft picks to evaluate talent makes no sense..a lot of people say look at our draft picks, we are a talented team, putting no context into it. the system you run will define your draft picks... uconn has so many players in the NFL because they literally run an nfl offense and defense. they get players that fit that mold, spend 4 years developing them on nfl style of play, playbooks and building nfl bodies. and nfl teams take them as they are plug and play Houston until last year ran an air raid, ttech still runs an air raid, baylor runs a uptempo spread, and ecu till this season ran an air raid...air raid players barely get drafted, the few that do are combine guys with scary measurements.. in the air raid or any true uptempo offense you get smaller fit players who can last 99 plays a game, a snap every 15 seconds. and through your 4 years you develop them on the air raid. the nfl is a whole different world for them. and plenty ended up not having the bodies needed but at the end of the day winning in the uptempo is way more realistic especially if you aren't out recruiting everyone (note how every elite, non powerhouse recruiting team runs the uptempo..oregon/tcu/baylor)..and you're there to win games not setup players for the draft

Nevada Convert
Teams like Cincy, USF, UCONN, etc. were in a BCS conf. a few years or so ago, so that's been a big advantage.

My guess is SDSU's complement of NFL players is down because of a huge change in recruiting emphasis from Tom Craft to Brady/Rocky. I used to hear rumors that Craft would lure some studs by virtually guaranteeing they would be starters. That was sometimes effective but it hurt when those kids would tell recruiters from other schools and they would pass it along to recruits who played the same position. No such rumors anymore. It's now well known that regardless of your sterling reputation coming out, you have to earn playing time so we're getting a lot more talented 2-star guys than we used to and therefore although we may have less NFL-caliber players than we once did we have a much deeper roster.
