BYU lands a former UNLV player's son: Christian PoPoola Jr

Recommended Posts

BYU got a huge commit from Bishop Gorman product, Christian PoPoola Jr.

Apparently this kid's dad played at UNLV.

BYU fans are thrilled.  And Hoping that UNLV doesn't try to pry him away before signing day (maybe UNLV isn't interested?)

where it was mentioned last night, albeit in a unlv thread. :D i didn't feel like starting a new thread for a byu commit.

he was, and the offer was not going to come. at least not until menzies had received 'no thank you' from the others he is pursuing. but this kid did really well on the circuit this last month, he'll be a good get for byu.

Thank heavens!!!

This kid is an amazing athlete. I know he liked UNLV because his dad went there.

Is UNLV already loaded up on guards?

i don't know why menzies was not interested, i'm watching him as we speak. but i'm also watching O'Bannon, whose uncle (and dad soon to follow) had committed here but tarkanian released them when he was on his way out the door. THAT is who menzies is really working on, along with troy brown, and pj from findlay.

I think the reason that BYU got this kid is because he attended high school in Utah for 1 year, and BYU's assistant coach was his head coach.  Basically, he is friends with everyone on BYU's team already.

I think he looks like an amazing athlete.  But his shooting form might need a little work.

UNLV ought to go hard after the legacy recruits (like this kid).  Some of their former players are bound to have very talented kids.

maybe, but he sees the court well. like i said, he has pretty much blown up in the last month, as well as in april. he improved his stock a lot.

and byu was a close #2. didn't he used to play for the utah prospects before they moved back to vegas?

Yes.  UNLV was his dream school.  BYU was his close second, since he lived in UTah for a while.

BYU has had amazing success with the kids of former UNLV basketball stars.

Aztecs picked up transfer PG Devin Watson from USF. That took us out of the PG market back in early May.

SDSU has had 5 upper half NCAA berths in a row.

A couple weeks ago there was a discussion of why Menzies was not offering PaPoola:

One good point that was raised was that Menzies staff has prioritized PaPoola's backcourt mate at Bishop Gorman - Charles O'bannon Jr -  as the primary recruiting target.  The  O'bannon family has various ties to UNLV basketball.

Right now UNLV is working on another UNLV "legacy" who could play this year - the son of Patrick Savoy, who has played one year of JC ball and who has generated a lot of interest this summer.

Dave Rice's staff had offered PaPoola very early but supposedly backed way off after his father got into the business of being a "basketball scout" and moved to northern Utah.

That guy is a very good player.

A bit undersized, but good offensively.

He does struggle on the defensive end, though.

On problem that UNLV has had is that it gets too talented of players who are looking for 1 year of college, and then the NBA.

This works at some programs, but is hard to pull off.  Dave Rice did way too much of this.

It will be interesting to see what approach Menzies takes.  Charles O'Bannnon Jr sounds more like a 1 and done player than PoPoola.  Probably a much more talented player.

From his video, PoPoola definately needs to work on his shooting form, and probably won't start right away.+
