Route 66/i40

Recommended Posts

Just drove a car from Le Petite Roche to Cali.

Spent a night in the Kerkey.  Not a bad city, kind of reminds me of vegas without the casinos and whores.

Spend a day and night in Flagstaff, checked out the Walnut Park, Lowell observatory and had drinks and dinner downtown.  God I love that town, really unique place, beautiful country.

Then drove home through the Mojave.  Ive been reading some of the history of Route 66 and specifically the colorado river valley towns.  Pretty interesting.

I love western new mexico too, exotic place.  Anyone know what the water source is in Gallup?  There must be one, but I dont know what it is.

If you havent done the drive, I highly recommend it.  If youre interested in history and can take some time to stop at points and enjoy the trip, its really cool.

CP, is there a book or two you would recommend before taking the drive?

The last 10 years the wife and I have gotten into road trips, love them.  This summer taking a three week vacation with three grandchildren, unfortunately one of them is a Denver Bronco's fan, so I promised a tour of the stadium.  Just kidding, it will be fun.  Need to figure out the other stops in Colorado.

I've driven that route many times.  Flagstaff is beautiful.

@modestobulldog I'm going to visit Fort Collins this summer.  I plan on driving from Vegas up to Park City, UT then through Wyoming then drop down to Ft. Collins.  I could go on a more Southern route via I70 but, I've never driven through the part of Wyoming I'm driving so what the hell.  I will drive through Laramie and Cheyenne.  New places for me to see.  I've never been to Ft. Collins and I plan on staying a week or more depending on what I find there.

Someone needs to start a summer vacation thread....

I've never done that route and never been through Denver. I'd like to.  I would also love to see Montana and Wyoming (with a day trip to the Little Big Horn).

Because of my trip I've been reading about Fred Harvey and his Hotels/restraunts.  And Needles, who would have thought that dump in BFE would have such an interesting history behind it.

Learned that Mojave means people of the river.  Which makes sense.  That Colorado River looks like the bloody Nile, hundreds of miles of desert all around, and then you cross this beautiful blue ribbon with green on each side.

then you've past it, and it's more desert, for hours.

damn, it makes you appreciate the San Joaquin.  After the 40, I took the 58 up to Bako, those citrus and row crops look gorgeous when you come over the hill from tehachapi after staring at desert for hours.

on the other end of the trip Arkansas flat out kicks ass.  Green as could be, rolling hills and then the ozarks.  R-Kansas is an under rated state.  Very cool place to visit.  It's pretty as hell , reminds me of Kauai.

We drove the 66 thru Tucumcari NM, stayed the night.  My wife also stopped in Oatman with her parents.  The also stayed at a 66 motel in Kingman.  I am about 3 years from retirement, I think I would enjoy taking the full route with my wife.

The Rio Puerco is the main source of water for Gallup.
