Hawaii to the Pac-16

na, I rather have Boise St in the Pac-16 than New Mexico.

I understand why you would feel like that.

I personally would rather be in the Big12 than the PAC12. Actually, the basketball fan in me would want to be in the PAC12. The football fan in me says Big12 is where to be.

Hawaii seems to be the biggest MWC draw for SDSU as the 2014 game drew 35,686, around 7,000 more fans than the next closest MWC home opponent that season. The 2012 UH/SDSU game drew over 50k(fireworks game) and would have likely drawn 40k without the promotion.

35,000-40,000 seems to be what SDSU would probably average if their entire schedule consisted of PAC-12 teams(i'm giving them a 5,000 fan change of conference bump).  They had 2 PAC-12 games since 2000 that exceeded 50,000.  One was week 1 with UCLA in 2005, while the other was probably on fireworks night.  I don't think a  bottom-dwelling Paul Wulff-coached Washington State team draws 57,000 on its own.  All the other PAC-12 matchups since 2000 drew between 30,000 and 35,000.

Expect an even bigger crowd this coming season.  The Chargers vs. the Titans happens the following day after UH takes on SDSU.  Manti Te'o vs. Marcus Mariota.  They've been selling travel packages with both games and from what I understand, they've been selling like hot cakes!

Always enjoyed our series with the Aztecs!

Go Bows!

Go Warriors! Go Bows! Go Wahine! GO HAWAI'I!!

Hawaii road games are big draws for the many people with hawaii ties on the mainland.  This year's game at SJSU should be a big draw.  Even more if we have a decent showing up to that game.

I'd estimate 4-5K hawaii fans typically.

Good money for the Spartans

I am willing to bet on games vs UCLA, USC, Cal, Stanford & ASU will push attendance to the 50K range with more local interest as well as traveling fans of those teams adding to the total. We'll know more on this as we have H&Hs with most of those teams in the coming years.

Havng said that, I like our games with Hawaii and after the Aztecs, they are my favorite MWC team -- I would like to see scheduling have the Aztecs finish each season with Hawaii on Thanksgiving. I believe both our fanbases would travel better if we knew that game was always going to be on that long weekend either in San Diego or Hawaii.

It would be partiulary attractive for Aztec fans those years that SDSU is also playing in the Diamond Head Classic or for Hawaii fans when the Chargers are playing the next day at the Q.

That can be said for pretty much any team in MWC. Swap out UNM's home schedule of SJSU, BSU, Nevada, and Wyoming. For TCU's home slate of Iowa St, Oklahoma, Texas Tech (long standing OOC rival), Oklahoma St and Kansas St and you'd see an immediate boost in attendance.

I'm with you on this.  Both hawaii and SDSU being attractive places for fans to visit should get their cities to realize the sports tourism impact. UH's business school did a study of UH's economic impact to try to get more funding.  UNLV gets it and you see Boyd Casinos getting in the action, and maybe their get a new stadium (vs the dirt bowl parking lot they have currently).  A heavier PAC 12 schedule would benefit our economies and hopefully lead to more funding and attendance.  Unfortunately we are G5 and have the chicken-egg problem.

I think it might be in Hawaii's best interest to foster a stronger relationship with SDSU as a travel partner, business partner and potential PAC-12 expansion grouping.  I think we are the most alike and also may be viewed as strong contenders for expansion.  We have warts, and one would ditch the other if only one got promoted.  However, a stronger tie would be a win-win especially since SDSU is the only SoCal MWC member.  The LA-IE-OC MSA has a lot of hawaii connected people and a strong rivalry could form.  Granted SDSU has owned us in football for some time (there were some close games).  Recruiting occurs on both sides.

Out of the so called "islands":

9th island - Las Vegas

10th island - Bay Area

11th island - SoCal

SDSU has the greatest upward mobility.  It would be good for both our schools to align in all sports.

The SDSU hawaii tailgate is the 2nd largest for hawaii fans.  The SJSU is the largest and admission is free (see you guys there).

i used to invest in SD and it has a strong biotech sector, real estate, tourism, and military.  The zoo is great.  LegoLand, gaslamp is fun (been there twice after hawaii games), universities including a UC, decent financial district, and the south of SD has land for growth.  Not to mention the wealthy Mexicans used to come over, but now the US is too poor for them.

cutlurally we could learn to like each other, just we haven't had as much history as our WAC brothers UNR, Frenso, and SJSU.  UNLV likes hawaii obviously.  Time to make friends on the coast.  There is always power dynamics with the front range and others.

I'd like to see UH & SDSU to work together ... hell, I'd like to see UH, SDSU, BSU & BYU work together -- it's just not something that I have a whole lot of faith in since the re-ignition of the realignment era.

Hey, I feel the same way. I'd like to see CSU and UNM work together as well.

What would be outstanding is if we could all work together to dump Hair and improve our conference -- rather than working against each other to increase our individual stock.

First thing they can do is do away with travel subs and fix the tv deal to treat everyone as an equal. Then they can allow schools to keep their 3 tier deals, welcome back BYU.
