Is it time for a G5 Champions Cup?

Recommended Posts

G5 conference champions, besides the single access bowl selection, are being relegated to poor matchups by the current bowl system:

MWC - SDSU (Champion) vs. Cincinnati (AAC 6th) - SDSU wins 42-7

MAC - Bowling Green (Champion) vs Georgia Southern (SB 3rd) - G Southern wins 58 -27

CUSA - Western Kentucky (Champion) vs USF (AAC 4th) - W Kentucky wins 45-35

Sun Belt - Arkansas State (Champion) vs Louisiana Tech (CUSA 4th) - L Tech wins 47-28

All of these bowl games were G5 vs G5, and all were played from 19-24 December.

A possible better system:

SDSU vs. Arkansas St in New Orleans Bowl (assume SDSU win)

Western Kentucky vs. Bowling Green in Go Daddy Bowl (assume W Kentucky win)

and then

SDSU vs. W Kentucky in the Hawaii Bowl, 1100 pm eastern on New Year's eve.  The Cotton Bowl (last P5 bowl) starts at 0800 eastern, and lots of folks are going to be up until 1200 anyways.  It would be the only game on at midnight (or close to it pacific time), but the game would start at 6:00pm in Honolulu.  Pacific time zone locations for the championship game would also be OK.

Thoughts?

No

a lot of reasons but mostly it sends the wrong message. We want out of the G club. If you do this, you're happy to be in the little G cup world. Act like the other G-pions don't matter and go for better games.

You guys realize that all the G5 champions, except the access bowl selection, already played G5 opponents?

This idea would only pit the non-access bowl G5 champions against each other, and get the G5 another new years bowl slot.  The access bowl team would still go to the big boy bowl.

If this system were in place this year, SDSU would be playing in another bowl game, on New Years eve, against W Kentucky, instead of watching P5 teams.

How is the present system better?

I'm fine with it. With the exception of a couple/few schools that may get called up to the P5, we're all stuck at G5 level.  Doesn't matter what kind of message is sent...it's a done deal. The P5 is locking us out. Might as well make the best of it and get our champs play each other in some reasonably meaningful games.

Are you going to make up a new bowl for this? Because none of the established bowls is going to go for it. Who's going to fund this bowl? Who's going to bother broadcasting it?

Seriously, no one outside of the G5's cares a fig about ANY of the G5 teams including whomever makes it to the Access bowl. The G5's have zero leverage and not much interest outside of the various small market regions. The numbers and interest simply are not there. Give it up.

One of the Final Five..........

My suggestion was the Hawaii bowl.  This year's game (SDSU vs Cincy) drew about 12k fans and probably a fairly low TV rating.  I would guess that the Hawaii Bowl committee would be happy to move the game to New Years eve and to have 2 conference champions, perhaps both top 25 rated, play each other.  Other bowl options for the "Cup" could include Holiday, Poinsettia, Las  Vegas, or Foster Farms Bowls.  If you are willing to go into the Mtn time zone, then the Sun and New Mexico Bowls also are possibilities.

I agree that there is not much interest in the G5.  That's why I suggested a late start that avoids going head to head with the big bowls.  More folks would probably watch this bowl than any other (non-access) G5 bowl game, which is kinda the point.  It would also get 3 out of 5 G5 Conference Champions a New Years Day Bowl.  That would be a good thing for all.

I oppose this idea for the simple reason that it would endorse and add legitimacy to the P5/G5 division

Meh, it's happening (the division of P5 from G5) whether or not you choose to legitimize it. The only thing that can be done is to take control of it.

Au contraire. There are about a dozen ways to re-level the playing field for at least some of the current "G5" schools. Many others will probably just be better off cutting football or playing at a less expensive level than D1 FBS.
