B12 Expansion - Carpe Diem for MWC?

Recommended Posts

Most assume the B12 will take Cincinnati + 1 of either Houston or Memphis from the AAC.  Let's assume Memphis, as that would be the best for the MWC.  The AAC will be severely weakened and Houston, SMU, and Tulsa (and Tulane, but I don't know if anyone cares) would be left out and separated from the rest of the AAC.  Will the MWC be ready to take advantage of this situation?  Will the MWC use the addition of AAC schools to leverage BYU?  Some options:

Houston (Mtn) + BYU (West) - 14 teams (FB), strong additions, weakens AAC

Houston + SMU (Mtn) - BSU and USU move to West, recruiting options in Tx, especially for Mtn teams, weakens AAC

Houston + SMU + Tulsa + BYU (or Tulane) - Destroys the AAC and makes the MWC the G5 super conference.  Houston/SMU/Tulsa to Mtn, BYU and USU to West.  16 teams for FB means we probably have to go to a 9 game conference schedule, either 7/2 or 6/3 division v cross conference.

Many seem to believe that the AAC is stronger and going to stay that way.  I think that the MWC MAY have the opportunity to relegate the AAC to a lower level G5 conference.

Will the MWC be ready and willing to act?

Houston or no other Texas school will have an opportunity to join the Big 12. The conference already has 4 Texas universities and Houston does not add a new TV market.

The most likely candidates are Cincinnati, BYU, central Florida, Memphis or Boise State.

I agree that the MWC needs to be ready to act if/when the Big 12 expands which is just another reason that adding UTEP and Rice makes no sense at this point in time.  I think there is as much of a likelihood that the AAC tries backfilling w/ MWC schools (CSU, UNM, Air Force, Boise, and/or SDSU?) as there is that the MWC tries poaching the AAC.

Why would any AAC school in its right mind want to come to the present MW? Oops, I forgot. The MW is going to add Texas El-Armpit and Arroz con Pollo!

No offense, GoCo, but you need to start reading aztecsfight so you can get informed about what's best for US.

Boom goes the dynamite.

When Cincinnati and Memphis (assume instead of Houston) leave for the B12, who will be the standard bearers of the AAC -- Houston and .....USF?  Temple?  Tulsa?  Navy?

The AAC will be weaker than the MWC.  If Houston moved to the MWC, then it wouldn't even be close.  And if BYU joined with Houston....game over.

If Big12 expands it would likely be Cincinnati and Memphis.  The AAC could very well try to backfill by taking BYU, Boise State, SDSU and Air Force (or CSU).  The could move Navy and Tulane to the east and have two strong 7 team divisions, with 2 of the 3 Military schools.  Be careful what you wish for.

Agree that they will try to backfill with the best teams available -- MWC teams.  But, why would MWC teams go to a weaker conference that is geographically across the country?  Why wouldn't Houston, SMU and Tulsa consider moving to a better conference that's closer?

Huh?

I'll try to spell it out for you.  In the last round of expansion the MWC moved aggressively and achieved 2 notable goals:  They took the best teams from the WAC and eliminated them as a competitor in FB (and really in all sports) AND they somehow, God only know how, must have been some combination of dumb luck and the cycle of the moon, convinced 2 key wayward schools to return to the MWC, much to the chagrin of many.

So it's not totally unprecedented for the MWC to move and win vs. other conferences.

That was strictly reactionary from our three best schools leaving.  I don't think MWC has been proactive since gambling on TheMtn

Agree that the MWC has not been proactive, but we don't know the timeframe of B12 expansion.  Maybe there is still time for a change?  In any case, my point is that the opportunity MAY present itself and the MWC should be ready to act.

You gotta admit, it would be very good for all of us if the MWC was able to put a knife in the heart of the AAC.

While true, we would need to raise our collective stock starting now to be an attractive option to leave a conference who is having a good year.

I think you guys are smoking crack; if anyone is invited,  Houston will be the first. Would love to somehow have them in the MWC but it ain't never gonna happen.
