UTEP and New Mexico State looking to join the MW?

Recommended Posts

Something could be brewing.  UTEP and NMSU's athletic directors may very well present their schools to the Mountain West as a package deal.

Why would we dilute our TV revenue, playoff money & tournament credits?

They are talking basketball in a football centric world. I just don't see how this makes financial sense for the MW. I could see why NMSU wants out of the WAC badly though. Maybe they are looking at the BW? Would the Summit or another league make sense for them?

Hope this never happens.  What Mug said.  All it would turn out to be is two more mouths to feed.  Plus we already have sjsu suckling away.

If this ended up happening. It would make it a 14 team conference

Mountain

Utah St

Wyoming

Colorado St

New Mexico

New Mexico St

UTEP

AFA

West

Boise St

Nevada

UNLV

Fresno St

SJSU

SDSU

Hawaii (fb-only)/??(others)

I have been saying that for years. If no Big12/PAC12 invite is coming to MWC teams. Mtn Div teams are better off sticking together for the long run. UNM, CSU, Wyo, NMSU, AFA and UTEP belong with each other forever.

People insist that we would "dilute" our TV value. Did people forget we're already getting pennies compared to P5 $$. We're not going to lose millions of dollars by adding 2 more teams.

Swap out SJSU and USU for UTEP and NMSU and guess what? We're still going to be making the same amount of TV money. If we can't get football any stronger might as well make basketball stronger.

This would be a good move for UNM and what's good for the largest flagship is good for the MWC.  :)

NMSU should never even be a consideration.  Tiny market, and bring nothing of any value whatsoever.

Funny you say that. That's exactly how us MWC fans felt when they invited Nevada, SJSU, USU and FSU.

That could be the final nail in the coffin  for the MWC.

See above comment. That has already happened.

Make Hawaii a football independent and San Jose State a football only member. Then you can take NMSU and UTEP.

problem is, NMSU should just drop football, they are terrible at it. bring in UTEP for all sports to replace the loss of Hawaii and SJSU

MWC 12

West Division

Boise State

Fresno State

Nevada
San Diego State

San Jose State (football only)

UNLV

Air Force

Colorado State

New Mexico

Utah State

UTEP

Wyoming

hawaii is now gone, sjsu is now football only, nmsu drops football

for basketball, sjsu is now gone, NMSU comes along as non football member,

Air Force

Boise State

Colorado State

Fresno State

New Mexico

New Mexico State

Nevada
San Diego State

UNLV

Utah State

UTEP

Wyoming

The playoff is here and I can hardly believe this day has come. Now when will the playoff expand to 8 teams? 2016 please come true.

I could see it working out.  NMSU's non-football sports coming in to offset Hawaii's football-only status, UTEP and say UTSA come along as full members.  That would push the MW to 14 "full" members and get you back into Texas.

I think NMSU's basketball program is strong enough to get you folks to waive the football requirement for membership.

NMSU would add to the tourney credits, methinks.
