BYU to MWC and more $ for all

Recommended Posts

I'm watching BYU vs Memphis and, as much as I dislike BEW, it's pretty obvious that we should try to get them back in the MWC, so here's a win-win plan:

1.  Offer them a football only membership.  They seem to like the WCC, so let them stay there in Olys.

2.  Let them keep their current TV deal, but they get nothing from MWC.

3.  Put them in the Mountain division and move BSU to the West.

4.  Kick out SJSU.

Advantages:

1.  MWC football trades SJSU for BYU, definitely strengthening the conference.

2.  Smaller conference for MBB by getting rid of bottom feeder, better schedule and RPI.

3.  One less school to split the MWC TV deal, everyone makes a little bit more.

4.  BYU has a route to the Access Bowl.

5.  BSU gets to play traditional rivals Nevada and Fresno every year.

6.  BYU plays USU and traditional mountain rivals every year.

7.  FB only BYU balances FB only Hawaii.

Disadvantages:

1.  We lose SJSU (?).

2.  Road trips to Provo instead of San Jose.

3.  More BEW posters on the MWC board.

Discuss.

Why not just keep SJSU and think of going to 14? SJSU is rising slowly. They have the best 2015 recruiting class in the conference right now and that will pay off in a few years.

The real benefit for BYU under your plan would be that shot at the access bowl and keeping their ESPN contract. BYU gets what they want and we get a stronger conference.

Ok, I'll email Hair right now and tell him we can roll with that.

I don't want to play in the fckin' west, short road games to Logan and Provo

every other year are quite nice.

I have to agree. Now that I am used to it, I like the Mountain. Laramie sucks in the winter, but the roadies to Logan and Provo are rather enjoyable road trips. Plus get a trip to Reno or Vegas every year so far.

My stuff is good with that.

Give it time.  A couple more schedules with major holes late in the year might turn them in the right direction eventually.   Having the MWC team in the access bowl every year might do it too.  Then it's a given when the playoffs go to 8.  They are not that dumb to be left out.

Screw football only.  They'll also tire of playing in HS gyms for hoops too and desire to get back to a bigger time if not the big time.  They can schedule Gonzaga in the OOC.

This is the only thing I like about this post.

BYU has been able to build a pretty good schedule as an Independent, but that could change if more conferences go to 9 games.  If MWC teams decided not to schedule BYU, the quality of their schedule would decrease significantly, so the MWC does have some leverage.

When the MWC was in negotiation with BYU, the idea of uneven payout was unacceptable, but now it is a given.  BYU had to go Independent when Utah was accepted into the PAC, but they may look at playing in New Years Day Bowls as a way to show the Utes that they are the better program.

I hate to say this because I am not a SJSU hater, but they are, and I think will continue to be, the weakest link in the MWC.  And it's not really their fault.  There is just too much competition for sports dollars/interest in the Bay Area.  I believe that they will have a difficult time building any significant following even if their programs become more successful.  It is ironic that a school like Fresno in a less populated area of Cali is in a much better position to build a fan base, but that's the way it is.

Who are BSU's rivals in the MWC?

Nevada and Fresno are not our traditional rivals.

Who would you consider your traditional rival? Because you've played Nevada more than any other team, including Idaho.

90% of BYU fans love independence or at least that is what they tell me.

90% of BYU fans want to wait and see if the BIG12 expands to 12 teams before doing anything else.

Actually, with each season, BYU fans are more and more content in the WCC.  This is in part because the MWC basketball is a lot weaker than it was 5 years ago.  And UNLV has been down since Rice was hired as coach.
