NWRebel
As evidenced by the fact that UNLV was willing to pay Rick Pitino anything to coach here? That is, before we treated his wife like a cheap cab fare. Yeah, UNLV will never goes after hot commodity HCs. That was pre-Kruger and pre-recession. If they have the money I'm all for a big name. LACASEY
There are only two scenarios that will unfold after this season, UNLV will try to save $$ stay with Rice and sink the program even deeper (most likely) or they will make change and go with somebody else (the smart option). If UNLV goes with somebody else the ex Rice supporters will vilify Theus even more than first time around plus he just got new job and is in position to prove himself and shut up all his opponents. Be bold UNLV make George Karl happen.
Poster17
Bring on Bruce Pearl. CBP would be the King of Vegas. A hire that is big time, yet small time on the pocket book. Perfect for this situation. Of course none of this will happen till we see one more year like this one.
Aslowhiteguy
You are right. I had to look it up. It ends August 23, 2014 I wonder who gives him a shot? Vegas might be able to get him without breaking the bank with the understanding that the donors will pony up if he performs well. Quote "Don't underestimate Joe Biden's ability to F@*k things up." GhostTown5666
Really 18? Comparing Fisher to Reggie? Fisher was out of coaching for two seasons and let go just before the first of those so no job vacancies then. How long was RT left hanging? Rebels18
Really 18? Comparing Fisher to Reggie? Fisher was out of coaching for two seasons and let go just before the first of those so no job vacancies then. How long was RT left hanging? Theus wasn't left hanging at all. Was the Laker's D-league affiliate head coach before Northridge. The point is, just because no one hired him--doesn't automatically mean he doesn't have the goods to be a head coach. SDSU in 1999 was pretty much an equivalent job to Northridge today. You have to be the right fit, it's not like there were a flurry of open coaching positions when Theus was job-searching. It also has to be a right fit. Theus is a west-coast guy and needed a west-coast job to open up. UNLV mistakenly passed on him, Northridge didn't. Hopefully UNLV won't make the same mistake again,
bsrebs702
If the boosters and donors can get some scratch together, they CAN bring in a name hire. Shaka Smart would be like buying a new Ferrari, it's expensive as **** but your guaranteed some tail. Shaka Smart wouldnt leave for UCLA but would for UNLV....nope
GhostTown5666
Considering part of the topic with RT has been why he has not been hired at any other high profile coaching job, I would say that is left hanging. How many other D league coaches have went on to high profile college coaching jobs recently? bsrebs702
Doesn't that end this summer? Yes...same with Sampson. Sampson, Pearl or Karl would be 3 great choices. But I dont think Rice isnt getting fired after this year....another year like this one and it could happen.

GhostTown5666
Not sure, you would have to ask 18. Apparently D league coaching is the equivalent of high profile college coaching. Who knew? ag4fr
I lived close to Rice when he was in Logan. Nice guy, but I was underwhelmed by his leadership and communication style. He just didn't come across as a dynamic, quick-thinking guy with a big strong personality, like most college coaches that I know. I was surprised when he got hired at byu and even more surprised when he got the UNLV HC job. I think he is a good recruiter, but I was always a little skeptical about his X's and O's. I'm not a big fan of "truck and chuck" basketball. That seems to be all he knows. And I've always been skeptical about his ability to really lead a team. bsrebs702
I have been trying to give him benefit of doubt but getting real hard these days. What other coach thinks its a good idea to put in a backup pg in crunch time when the guy hasn't played a minute in 1st half? Has done it multiple times with Cook....STUPID!! Jack Bauer
Rice was a great assistant. Some guys aren't cut out for being the main guy.
ag4fr
I can agree with that. I think he was a pretty solid assistant coach at Utah State.

SleepingGiantFan
Not a chance. He is still under the three year NCAA Show Clause Penalty that transfers to any school that hires him. Edit. Yellow Evan
Idk why ppl want Pearl. He's a fricking cheater. I'd rather hire some of the coaches I mentioned last night. I'm an outsider, I don't know much, but I think the timing is wrong too. First, UNLV might want to go a completely different direction from ex player, after the Dave Rice. I think, a Lon Kruger type (established head coach, low ceiling, but high floor). Admins, looking at Theus's first year, aren't going to be overly impressed, he will be tough sell to idiots that don't get how difficult the situation is at Northridge. If he had three years in at Northridge, and was turning it around, completely different story. Agreed. Sick of this tired, irrelevant argument that means NOTHING. Forget high-profile, not even a decent school would touch Steve Fisher either until little ol' SDSU swooped him up in 2000. Look at him now. Leaving NMSU to coach the Kings was a bad career move for Theus--it hurt him. Still doesn't change the fact he was a winner at a NMSU that was a program in shambles. Rick Pitino and Tarkanain vouch for Theus's coaching ability. If not for UNLV, who would've ever hired Dave Rice as HC? Who will ever hire him again? He IMO would have gotten a Big West job and he'll end up somewhere at a low-major if fired. Quote 7 hours ago, ph90702 said: If you’re such a UNLV fan, why did you go elsewhere?
