Clock is ticking

Recommended Posts

I’m full time over at Rebel Raid. Small community with zero riff raff.

Opposing fans that are not trolling are obviously welcome. As for this place, I’ve contacted Jeff to no avail, I believe given his absence that he’s done with this site and will let it run its course. Several people are going to bid on the domain and we’ll just see who wins that one. Either way we’ll see a different forum in the next few months whoever it is running it.

Does anyone have any ideas what the cost is to open/run one of these forums? What kind of capital is needed to recreate a site like this? Is a web developer needed?

If you need full service, you could replicate and improve this site for about $90/month. If you have some technology skills and can manage/host the site by yourself, you can cheapen that up quite a bit (also depending on software you use).

It used to be cheap, I used to run an hunting/outdoors forum that had several hundred active members. It was actually slightly profitable with sponsors and a couple posters giving small donations. The profit went to any necessary upgrades or a charity the community supported. Unfortunately with the advent of Instagram and Facebook groups, it really went downhill quickly over 2 years and the leftovers were all trolls etc. Just closed it up and it’s very similar to what I see elsewhere.

It’s a different world now and I’m not sure the current format of message boarding is sustainable long term, certainly not profitable. A lot of the former boards I used to be a part of have closed up shop. ESPN boards, local rags used to have neighborhood forums etc.

Speaking of local rags, I remember when the Las Vegas Review Journal came after this place with lawyers for not paying for the articles posted here.

You get large enough, people will come after you or posters will complain nonstop. There’s always something and it’s a giant headache. Unfortunately there hasn’t been enough momentum here to justify a new site and forum as the season already kicked off.

In fact probably more dead and quiet here than a month ago.

I doubt any message board is a great long-term investment. That said, I'm certain this place is slower because of @Jeffkills. Nobody is going to engage only for this place to die in a few weeks.

If it changed ownership, it could be resurrected to an extent.

My guess is that previous "managers or owners" with admin access already copied all the info. They likely already threw their hat in the ring to acquire the domain name.

Once @Jeffkills lets domain expire, they'll have his money and the site back.

That's why I don't understand why Jeff won't do something like sell or transfer to someone else. He's playing into their hands.

Anybody good with python and can scrape this site for the archive? We could set up a new site and not lose the archive that way.

I'm not 100% sure but this might have archived it. If this works, anyone who is interested, save the link. You could pin this in a thread at the top of a new board.

Straggler here from rivals

i was actually a moderator and was the reason that place went to crap. I didn’t delete any messages and let that place be a free for all.

im looking to hang with fellow UNLV fans and fellow Mountain West stablemates.

I have nothing against current or past members .

where is everybody headed to?

I could see Jeff keeping the site

How do you know he'll let the domain expire?
