Rebuild the MWC

Recommended Posts

Sacramento State should be priority. They already have aspirations to join a power conference and treats themselves as one. They're competitive and have the 20th biggest media market. Like wtf is mountain west really doing? They've lost their California markets and they have one primed and ready and begging to join FBS......

After that Portland State should be a priority. Get into Oregon, another competitive football team.....

University of San Diego wouldn't be bad either.

NDSU/SDSU or The Montana's. Ideally the Montana's

Idaho, have them play Boisie ;)

There's routes MW can take to maximize their brand. But they're looking like dead fish on a river stream.

The MWC needs to bring home UTEP and NMSU to stop the bleeding. Texas State and Sam Houston State are probably a pipe dream at this point, but contact should still be made. The question becomes whether we're going for the Sun Belt model or the CUSA model after that. If the prior, Montana/Montana State or South Dakota State/North Dakota State is the play. If the latter, either Sac State or UCD and Portland State.

Texas State, Sacramento State, Portland State

Broaden that western belt, Texas State just to get into Texas. Really the Montana schools could make the jump they have fan bases and fills their arenas playing boring competition.

Sacramento State should be the priority though.

Portland State? They play in a Soccer Stadium because they're too poor, they're not in consideration.

The MWC will backfill with UTEP and NMSU as they're the closest and best FBS options. After that who knows, Texas State would be a long shot imo so you'd go after FCS teams, in particular the FCS Big4:

SJSU...............Montana

Nevada............MSU

Air Force.........UTEP

UNM................NMSU

Wyoming........Sac State

*Hawaii............Idaho

*NDSU............*SDSU

* = Football Only

After that you target teams like Utah Valley, GCU etc. to ensure you reach your 12 full members goal.

Yeah I'm tripping on Portland State they're not ready yet, but you never know what many can do with Capitol****

NMSU is attractive with a strong basketball program but they're in with CUSA with agreements.

California Media market is important, I'm sure we're going to see Sacramento State in the mountain west soon. Even if they're eyeing Pac 12 in the long run.

But that's an attractive conference you have their. Would be a nice basketball conference too.

Which soccer stadium does PSU play in? I thought they weren't allowed to play in Providence Park and have to play at the Ron Tonkin atheltic complex out in Hillsboro in a HS stadium

I know they don't play in the Timbers stadium anymore, just thought it was another soccer stadium while I was watching the Griz/PSU game last year.

The MWC was idiotic when they didn’t pick up Texas st, UTSA when they could have easily a couple of years ago  I’m not even sure you can get UTEP and NMSU to come over now. You are going to have to pay an FCS school at least 5 probably more like 10 million to move up to just to get to the minimum 8 schools. There is a 5 million dollar fee to move to FBS now and I’m sure a NDSU will ask the MWC to pick up the tab for it.

You fold and join conference USA and lose all the exit fees or do what WSU and OSU did at a much smaller scale. This is what will be left. But I think the MWC folds. Below are the 4 teams left.

Nevada CUSA

NM CUSA

SJSU CUSA

Wyoming Big Sky or do an SMU for 5 years to CUSA or 2 decades to the PAC7. Forgoing all tv revenue for years. Wyoming boosters are going to have to puny up millions of dollars to maintain FBS status.

The MWC is looking at paying out 40 million to incoming teams to maintain FBS status. No way anyone is joining you without some  cash especially an FCS school.

AF gone AAC or independent

Hawaii independent unless you give them a Boise deal

UNLV gone PAC8

New MWC assuming theyreinvest all the exit fees for rebuilding which I doubt they will want to do.

pay Hawaii to retain then raid the westerns FCS ranks

Hawaii

NM

NMSU

SJSU

Sac St

Nevada

Wyoming

NDSU

South Dakota St

Montana

Montana St

one Utah school probably Weber St or Utah Tech.

UVU BB only

Grand Canyon BB only

Denver BB only

12 football and 15 basketball.

i could see the Dakotas and Montanas schools putting a playoff team in occasionally.

This is probably a 40 to 60 million dollar investment for the MWC.

The cheapest they can go is probably the best move.

THIS

Need to look at options in Texas other than UTEP. El Paso and Las Cruces bring nothing as far as television. Or recruiting. Sam Houston maybe, UNTx, etc. Rather have North Dakota.

Well you aren't getting any AAC schools.  Not with losing 5 teams and counting.  And you aren't getting Sun Belt schools.  So no UNT and no Texas State.  As of now, CUSA schools would move.  But take UNLV and Air Force off the table for example, and now the MWC will really struggle to attract non FCS schools.  I am sure if the remaining 5 all sports members sign a GOR to show stability in that scenario, and the MWC opens up the checkbook from all the PAC funds to share, then you could convince NMSU and UTEP to go.  But with each loss and no GOR?  It becomes less and less attractive, and certainly hard to show any new schools that there will be a big cable contract on the horizon.

Very few, if any, schools are going to transition to FBS anymore. There's the $5 million transition fee. There's adding 42 scholarships, NIL money, the cost of staff and facility salary upgrades/improvements, and new FBS teams will not get any CFP money for their first seven years.

UC Davies, Sacramento State, Tarleton State, Incarnate Word has all expressed that they intend to move up. NC A&T as well

Just merge already

If not

Enjoy the exit fees. Buy some talent. Win!

Every team leaving is another $20-30M to rebuild with.

That's why all this dissolution talk is nonsense - there's too much money to lose at this point.

If UNLV and AFA split, I'd want UTEP, New Mexico St and Idaho.

Why those 3? Because I think they are the most likely accept invites not because they add a damn thing to what's left of a conference.

Realignment 101-No one is moving for a worse financial situation. History and rivalries be damned. Its all about money and perceived survival.

If a school is the right fit, I would think the MW would cover the $5M with the payout.
