Can any other schools afford to leave the MW? UNLV maybe but anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I mean Air Force to AAC as football only makes sense but how can they afford the buyout? Won't they basically need the MW to dissolve? I could see some Vegas money coming in and paying the buyout for UNLV to go where they want to (if it is someone else other than MW). But even in that case there is still 7 schools left and I am sure they would just buy a CUSA school (with the 100 mil plus warchest) to come to the MW to assure the conference survives.

Air Force will always have money it needs, if they want to leave they will.  The can easily go the AAC as football only, and park their Olympics in another league like the Summit.

And honestly it probably makes the most sense for them to do that. It would allow them to schedule some additional OOC games as Navy and Army are conference games in that case.

If that happens, we can end the commander and chief game that is the exclusive game the week after the conference championships.  Could be the start of the G5 playoff.

Wrong question to ask, the question is can anyone afford to stay? The next tv payout will be a fraction of what we currently get. You are looking at something close to CUSA levels.

A considerable haircut. Every school in this conference is going to do what’s best for them. Staying might not be the best thing.

That $100 plus million war chest gets scattered if the conference dissolves...

Yep. I mean the MW 8, even with the huge tv deal cut, is actually going to be in better shape $$$ when they are using up that 100 mil plus and getting all those NCAAT credits earned years ago. It won't be until those dry up that the money crunch happens.

Why backfilling with FCS teams would be better and I think cheaper then poaching FBS:

Montana, MSU, Sac State and Idaho get the Conference back to 12 and with the $$ from the leaving schools the MWC could help a bit, they could come in at lower rates initially and honestly think they're better brands then NMSU and UTEP.

It won't be an actual hair cut until they are done spending the Pac-2 warchest they get. Also most of the schools left only option for conference jumping will be the CUSA. Yes UNLV, Air Force, and maybe Hawaii could have options other than staying but for the rest seems like it is stay or join the CUSA.

I hope it does but it is a longshot. With these recent updates the MWC needs to adopt the Sun Belt approach, get schools who care about Football, regional (by Western Standards) and more importantly have a history of winning.

The big 4 from FCS (Montanas and Dakota States) would do that for a depleted MWC (assuming UNLV and maybe Air Force is also gone). Sac State gets you into a big Market in California and Idaho gets you back into the PNW. And though unpopular to some it would be an awesome Conference IMO:

SJSU.................Wyoming

Sac State..........Montana

Nevada.............MSU

Idaho................New Mexico

Hawaii..............NDSU

USU..................SDSU

Your administration is the reason why our basketball league is bleeding out currently. If you didn't insist on San Jose being in the MWC, so you guys would have someone that votes similar to SDSU, every team in the MWC wouldn't have to play 2 games vs. a team with a 330 RPI ranking EVERY season.

Negative.  Athletics pay their way and we don't have much in the bank
