Great article and it nails the truth. This is more about egos than money. Schools like SDSU and BSU have always considered themselves too good to be lumped in with the likes of the teams in the MWC. It may work out for them in the end, but it will be at the expense of their previously loyal conference mates.

This article is the perfect example of the elite bubble mentality.  Upper crest schools should have freedom while lower level schools should just except their fate.  This is the equivalent of a divorce.  The conference had grown in different directions with sdsu having a 100m athletic budget and UNM with 35m.

This joker is missing the like mindedness of the new conference.  Should you stay in a dysfunctional marriage unless you can marry a supermodel?  No, you get the hell out.

i wonder if you guys still think the 20 game conference schedule was worth it!

You are right about one thing. New Mexico is dirt poor which will not likely change anytime soon.

I don't really think it has anything to do with egos at all. It's about staying afloat. Every school outside of the SEC/B1G duopoly has no choice but to jump at any incremental move upwards that's offered to them, because the alternative of getting left behind is devastating.

Ultimately, this is the TV networks' fault for stacking the deck in favor of certain programs and conferences for so long and creating such an obscene disparity in money, resources and access. They have taken what's supposed to be a fun diversion and turned it into a soulless rat race for most FBS schools where tradition no longer counts for anything.

Wolken wastes so much space in that article railing against athletic departments for wanting to be at the "cool kids' table" without giving a moment of thought to why they all feel that way, because to do so would mean admitting that the media ruined college sports, and clearly no reporter wants to do that.
