What should she have done?  No scheduling agreement?  I think they would have just paid another conference like the AAC or C-USA. At least the MW has enhanced poaching penalties that went along with the scheduling.

She got the conference $43 million in poaching fees.

The MWC will still get raided, she had a prime opportunity to invite them in or leave them out. She gave them a life raft for a quick payday and now they have taken 4 quality schools, and we’re going to replace them with…North Dakotas and Montanas? Nah.

She got played. I guarantee you other schools are making calls to get out of this conference.

exactly.  She was given an impossible task for the most part because the Pac2 never  considered merging with the MWC.  Not once.   And so she played hardball hoping she could keep the gang together.  Not many are good negotiators when backed into a corner.

As for UNLV, I'm confused too.  They are clearly gaining momentum and for my money would have been in the first 4 added.

Problem is the Pac2 isn’t making the decision solely, they have a network they are working with. The network (likely CW) wanted major markets and time zones spread out. They already have the ACC on the schedule and now they can get pacific/mountain and soon central.

The rebuilt conference will get more tv money and MWC gets significantly weaker. We are +++++ed.

And SDSU and Boise State have wanted out since they joined (both the WAC and MWC). Fresno State has good rivalries with SDSU and BSU, but CSU is kind of a head scratcher....

She played herself and overplayed her hand.  She tried to stick it to sdsu in a very public way and then continued to stick it to sdsu by being insisting on equal NCAAT credit distribution and a 20 game conference schedule.

in essence, she catered to the bottom half of the conference and so the top half left.  She could have looked at how the WCC has kept Gonzaga, but was more interested in power trips and miscalculating her leverage.

on a positive note for the mwc, at least they won’t have the Boise $ exceptions to deal with or SDSU fans

I don’t know if it’s positive, the next tv deal is going to be even worse than the current one. Our media footprint just shrank, probably in half.  Good luck getting 3 million a share again.

AAC gets significantly more and you’ll see them poach a few schools from the MWC. I don’t see schools like Air Force standing pat.

Congratulations Gloria, you killed the conference.

If she ever agrees to anything or responds to anything ever again that states our conference is G5 or has somehow joined forces with the SkunkBelt, American, CUSA, or MAC she has to be shown the DOOR!

If this clown Nevarez shows her face at any meeting that groups only us and four other conferences together she has to be tarred and feathered as she is SHOWN the unemployment line!

DISGRACIAD!!! We are paying for this type of leadership? She is supposed to be doing the exact opposite and telling the world we have nothing to do with those other four slug conferences and to stop grouping us together!

worst commissioner ever.

Your conference is a G5, no better than the Big West.  Can’t wait for the mwc / big west bball challenge and unlv’s annual appearance into the pyramid.  Go beach

How much you think Tulane, Memphis and UTSA is in play according to Barnes. They know they have UNLV in their pocket and maybe the last to get invited till they figure out Reno's attachment.

When the dust settles I guess UNLV Tulane & Memphis to the P12/9. They will pause @9 to see if Cal Stanford and SMU become available later.

AFA to AAC,  UTEP NMSU to MW along with several FCS schools

was this outcome always inevitable? If she had been more accommodating to the PAC TWO would it have mattered?

A lot of this is really Hair's fault and the complacency of the schools that kept him in charge for as long as they did. When other conferences were busy realigning, the MWC always stood pat or took too long to make the no-brainer decision. It was also totally inept at anything media-related, whether it was the MTN Network debacle, banishing some of the biggest conference matchups to Versus, or leaving ESPN for FOX and CBSSN. The conference has arguably been on borrowed time ever since Hair struck out on Gonzaga and Wichita State, if not since Utah, BYU and TCU's departure.

I do think Gloria deserves some blame for allowing Oregon State and Wazzu to keep the MWC at arm's length (as does the WCC's commissioner), but she inherited a difficult job with a lot of previous failures set in stone.

The only sane thing any MW commissioner (or any commish in the age of realignment) can and should do is heavy incentives for top performing teams and a smaller base payout.  Let the play on the field decide, not people’s judgements on how much schools invest (or waste) on the nicest facilities.  Sure that could lead to the bottom of the league falling further behind, but this is a negotiating point to keep this all together.

Gloria hiring a so-called "threatcaster" from ASU of all schools is... uh... really something. ASU was one of the most stubborn backers of Larry Scott and remained willfully blind to how much he was destroying the PAC. After being so loud and wrong when it came to their own situation, it boggles the mind that any other conference would turn to them for advice.
