OSU's AD has said numerous times he wants to remain regional. No CUSA or AAC team is regional.

I could see NMSU/UTEP. It's only an extra hour from the ABQ.

Does he consider the Front Rangers as extra -terrestial ?

It has $255 million of brand value. It has brand value that its remaining teams can both get a better TV deal than the current MWC deal.

Quick, tell me how many of the original Eagles are in the band. How many of the original Rolling Stones. They had no problem keeping their brand value with replacement parts.

I also had no idea the MWC started the Rose Bowl. Learn something every day.

Historically, USU and UNR have been competitive in both Sports. They sadly are in small markets.

Personally, I'm thinking UH, UW, Sparty, and UNM are at the bottom of the food chain.

If the MW loses Schools, (less than 5% chance imo) I'm thinking that six are still left and they reach out to UTEP, NMSU, NDSU, SDSU, and a couple more Texas Schools.

Realistically conferences do not break up or remain together on what fans think.  What are you basing your thinking on as to who goes and who stays?  Does anyone know what is going on behind closed doors?

Nevada, Wyo, UNM and USU would be like the final bubble teams. It just depends on what criteria you're emphasizing at that moment.

Hawaii is weird. I don't know how to categorize it.

At least Sparty is in the bay area.

If six leave, I  would almost want to stay at six teams and pick up some basketball schools to help with scheduling in those sports.

The ADs wouldn't want the hassle of that many OOC games.  No way they would stay at 6.

I agree with most folks here that it's not going to happen, but IF six schools left I think we'd see at least two hundred pages added to the conference realignment thread discussing how to rebuild the MWC, LOL.

As Wyobraska says, we'd need more than six for football.  I'm thinking the minimum is nine so that everyone still has a balanced eight-game conference schedule.  However I agree with you that it would also make sense to pick up some non-football schools, so that the conference has at least 11 or 12 members for non-football sports.

The choice of the non-football additions should be determined by whether Hawaii continues to be a football-only member or is converted to an all-sports member.

If Hawaii continues to be a football-only member, then for non-football sports purposes SJSU and Nevada can be treated as West Coast outliers, and all of the additions can come from the mountain and central time zones.  For example the targeted football additions could be NMSU, UTEP, and Texas State, and the targeted non-football additions could be Utah Valley, Denver, and UTA.

This would be the new 9/11 MWC lineup (travel partners paired):

SJSU/Nevada

Utah State/Utah Valley*

Wyoming/Denver*

NMSU/UTEP

Texas State/UTA*

New Mexico/[none]

Hawaii**

*non-football member

**football-only member

If Hawaii is converted to an all-sports member, it will be important to minimize everyone's travel burden by limiting new additions to schools in the pacific and mountain time zones and setting up divisions for non-football sports.  For example the targeted football additions could be Montana, Montana State, and UTEP, and the targeted non-football additions could be UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and UC San Diego.

This would be the new 9/12 MWC lineup (travel partners paired; assuming a 16-game basketball schedule, each member would need to take only one three-game cross-division road trip per season):

WEST DIVISION

SJSU/Nevada

UC Santa Barbara*/UC Irvine*

Hawaii/UC San Diego*

EAST DIVISION

Montana/Montana State

Utah State/Wyoming

New Mexico/UTEP

*non-football member

Of course there are about a hundred variations to the above lineups that could be considered, but the key starting point should be to determine what kind of member Hawaii will be going forward.

^^^^

True but not so much.  USU's TV market is the state of Utah which means we compete with BYU and Utah, the Utah Jazz, Real Salt Lake, Utah Hockey Club (NHL) etc.  And Utah is one of the fastest growing states.   Being the smallest fish in a big pond is the same problem facing SDSU, CSU, AFA, SJSU, FSU, UNLV, & UNR.  The other MWC schools are just in small markets.  If the MWC was anything else, we'd have a better TV deal already.  Just existing in a big TV market is only one part of the TV $$$ equation that most everyone seems to forget.

I agree that this scenario wont happen but if the 6 were left behind the MWC would be able to easily backfill:

Montana, MSU, UTEP, NMSU

Gives you 4 regional opponents and 10 schools, due to what would probably be a cut down TV deal would help save $$ for the remaining members. And personally don't think it'd be a bad looking Conference:

SJSU, Hawaii, Nevada, USU, Wyoming, UNM, NMSU, UTEP, Montana, MSU

If they wanted to get to 12 teams other options would be: SDSU, NDSU, Sac State, Idaho, UC-Davis

You know, you could also rebuild the Big West as an FBS league with the MW leftovers

What's so doggone great about OSU and WSU?  Two mediocre programs  in two ridiculously small markets......just wait til their budgets are decimated by lack of the media money they   receive....they were sucking off PAC 12 teats for decades.....

I think Oregon State & Washington State invite the "Top 9" schools from the MWC + UTSA for a 12 team league.  That way "they" (nor anyone else) has to pay any penalties.

Question is, which 3 MWC schools will be left behind?  And where would they ultimately end up?

My guess:

Hawaii (goes Independent)

Utah State (C-USA)

Nevada (C-USA)

You want to keep CSU-San José over the Aggies from Logan???

That's because the PAC stole all the bowl games we started and built up over years.

Lots of misinformation and hot air in this thread.  Here are the facts of the PAC-2 settlement with the traitorous 10.  Give it a quick read if you're unsure how the PAC-2 move forward to keep as much of the settlement $$ as possible.

Pardon the interruption, but it does not appear to me that WSU/OSU are really playing with all that many aces or other fabulous options up their sleeves.

What am I missing?  WSU/OSU might not be in much of a position to dictate terms.

If I was GN would extend an offer to WSU/OSU to join the MWC immediately with the understanding that Membership fees are not static are likely going up dramatically in the near future.

It is also reasonable that, with a healthy dose of conference stabilization, schools like UTEP and NMSU could become fine, solid, reliable conference members in the MWC.  Their travel distances going east are really not less than going west.  UTEP is pretty darn regional to most of the MWC and have already been in a conference with many of the MWC members.  Ditto for NMSU.

In many ways, neither would be much of a stretch geographically at all for the MWC.  I say extend the offer to those 2, then, and then get to work on a couple more western non-football playing schools (Zags, St. Mary's) the round out the conference.

Build the MWC to last and to make a substantial mark in the FB and MBB world.  Stability through strength.

UTEP and NMSU…Haha!!!

The Big West isn't a signatory to the CFP agreement.  The MWC is, and for that reason I would expect any rebuild to utilize the MWC shell.

Why do they all 'need' each other?

Why does Wyo need SDSU?

Why does Fresno need UNM?

etc

Because it’s all you have and it’s all you’re going to get. You want someone else, then go travel across the country every day and kill yourself. You need at least 12 members so you always have at least a few schools having an up year.
