The NCAA has a way of sticking it to the G5 schools who they are supposed to also represent.

The NCAA is no longer in charge of their own decisions.  The directions are coming from the SEC/B1G.

In the next year or so ADs at all schools are going to have to make hard decisions on where to put their money.  What sports they want to fund and what sports they will drop.

In the end there will be few opportunities across the board for the student athletes.

That’s a big deal.  Huge jump for baseball.

It's an equally huge jump for softball going from 12 scholarships to 25 scholarships.   Now there will be teams with 25 players all on full scholarships.   The best team in the country for the last four years (Oklahoma) had only 21 players on their team for the 2024 season.

Personally I think Baseball being increased to 34 scholarships is absurd.   No baseball team needs more than 25 players IMO.   Twenty five gives room for 3 catchers - two players for every other non-pitching position and 8 pitchers.   That's PLENTY.  Nine more players is just ridiculous.

This will allow many more people to earn college scholarships. How can that be a bad thing?

Why is it a bad thing? Where is this money coming from for these extra scholarships?  Only a small percentage of schools will be interested in funding these additional scholarships.  Schools will drop other sports to fund the additional scholarships or decide to be underfunded and thus not be competitive.

Don’t schools make choices like that all the time?  Schools always pick and choose what sports they want to sponsor.  It varies greatly, even among schools in this conference.

Then it's not many more people earning college sponsorships is it?

The truth is there will be fewer overall scholarships as schools drop programs to try to keep up.

That is up to the school to decide. I see a lot of small colleges that offer way more sports than the D1 schools. The kids may not get full scholarships, but most of the kids are getting some kind of scholarship. Maybe they don’t travel the country playing their sport and instead compete against other colleges in their state or region, but that is ok. The kids still have an opportunity to compete in the sport they love and earn a degree.

I am not debating the issue of it being up to the school to decide.  Of course it is.

Your initial comment was ' this will allow more people to earn college scholarships. how can that be a bad thing?'

I explained why it was a bad thing... this is a money saving move.  Programs will be dropped as a result.  That is a bad thing to people in that sport.

This is what it is.  Time marches on.  This is similar to decisions made when Title IX was enacted.  It was fantastic for women's sports but schools dropped men's sports in order to deal with the financial end of the decision.  Great for women's sports but not so much for the men's sports that were dropped.

Here is a list of ALL of the new limits - check out the very first one - TUMBLING increased from 14 up to 55.  Who on Earth has a COLLEGE "tumbling" athletic team and WHY?

My cynical side thinks that number was increased so much for Title IX compliance.  Primarily a women's sport.

If you read the articles the cause of this is because the NCAA was taken to the woodshed in court and in the House of Representatives for their policies.  They are doing this to avoid future lawsuits.

I'm talking about that particular sport.  I know why they are increasing scholarships.

I mean 8 pitchers isn’t enough for a team.  I hear you on 3 catchers and 2 positional players each place is a lot but honestly if I built a team I’d have 15 pitchers no problem.

House is the name of the guy who filed the lawsuit.
