Five years from now, will we have a Pac-12 and a Mountain West?

Recommended Posts

I guess I think of the MWC as the Mountain and West Conference.

Which it actually seems to be, as denoted by having a Mountain Division and a West division with schools in (yes, you guessed it) the Mountain Time Zone and the most Western Time Zone.

By your logic, the ACC and the PAC need to turn in diplomas and admit pure failure in Geography.

And by the way, let's not even get started on the numbered conferences that really have nothing to do with that number anymore.

Might as well name them the "Rotting Fish Smell Bad" Conference.

The only thing UNLV and SDSU have going for them is that they are good travel destinations. Decent markets too but no eyeballs tune into their games so TV ad value is zilch. They have never done anything of significance in football.

Since your school joined the MWC, SDSU has won two football titles outright and tied Boise for a third. That puts Boise exactly one football title ahead of us.

Well, we ditched divisions on the assumption that it would somehow get us into the CFP.  Stupid idea.  You're point is well taken though.

More than only good travel destinations.  Imagine either playing top-tier teams as a member of a P5 conference, year-in and year-out.  Teams like Oregon, Alabama, Texas, Penn State and Clemson.  Now consider fielding a competitive team and beating one of these name-brands.  The eyeballs in SC and Vegas will follow success.  Just as they did with the Knights.  Beating MWC no-bodies brings no tangible results.  Competition against marquise teams brings eyeballs ($$$).  Vegas and San Diego are rich targets for that haves.

SDSU is going to have to pick football or basketball, it doesn’t have the juice to fund both at a high level.

All I know is we have the pac12board.com now that is being rebranded for all west coast college sports.  Just saying.

Lol. I love when you post.  More examples of you not knowing shit. Especially about Western sports. Just 3 seasons ago, SDSU finished 12-2 in football ranked in the T25. The same year, their basketball team finished 23-9 and went dancing once again. So clearly the juice is there with their current budget.

One thing we all know for sure is UCF isn’t good at any sport.  UCF finished at the bottom of the B12 in both rev sports.  An impressive 3-6 in conference football and 7-11 in hoops.  Looks like there is no “juice” at all in Orlando.  Once again, it shows how desperate the B12 was for warm bodies when OU/T said they were leaving.

You should stick with what you know, which is nothing.

I still think that when all is said and done the MW and PAC-2 will merge in some fashion.

It would be beyond belief if Wazzu and OreSt had already worked thru their grief and merged with the MW. But it will happen eventually.

Both schools will be conf champ contenders every year for FB and BB in what will be the 5th best conf by overall brand and depth in revenue sports. The B12 or ACC will always be there and will do what they do. But the Pac2 merging with the MW does not reduce their quality of either brand and if they can win conf championships will reinforce the idea they are the next to be called by a more lucrative conference.

Let’s hope the PAC2 bring Gonzaga with them when they “leave” the WCC.

Talked with a high-level OSU administrator at the regional baseball game this past Monday. OSU/WSU officials remain in regular contact with the MWC commissioner/brass. Weekly if not more often.

I do not know what is going to happen in regard to WSU/OSU's athletic future for the 2026-27 academic year, once the temporary arrangements with the MWC and WCC expire. But I was assured whatever it is, a decision will be made before this time in 2025 so whatever the new arrangement is, it can be facilitated smoothly, efficiently and without having to rush, so it's done right.

This source knows their stuff.

Personally, I'm still holding out for a Pac-2/MWC reverse merger. The Big 12 is a complete pipe dream and I want nothing to do with some patchwork, convoluted far-flung conference that includes Tulane, Memphis, some ACC rejects and Texas directional schools. Give me western universities, sharing geography, relatively equal budgets and academic priorities.

I’ve got to think western athletes are going to get really tired of traveling east for half their games especially Stanford and Cal who will be playing the eastern seaboard schools. That’s a long round trip over a weekend.

It would not surprise me to see a new PAC form in several years. How that will relate to the current PAC2 and the MWC is anyone’s guess.

This actually makes sense if the money is not so big for the transferring P12 schools that they decide to endure the bother of traveling across the the country 3 or 4 times a year.

Hey, we were almost "Big East" w Boise a few years ago. 🤣

If I were Aztec fans I may be pissed for not staying in the "Big East" because it's possible SDSU and BSU may have jumped the line if they succeeded at the expense of the other teams there.

The Aztec basketball program would have crashed and burned in the Big West. The quality of recruits and competition would have dropped. Winning the BW gets you a 13 seed at best. The Aztecs benefited from two consecutive five seeds

The Aztecs made the right move by staying in the MW.

I was more than a wee bit shocked the other day when I was bumping around the internet and came to the sudden realization that Viejas Arena is more or less just plopped right into the old Aztec Bowl.

I had not realized that before.

What is the SUDS plan for cleaning up this mess?  Or are they just going to leave it be, like some ancient Aztec pyramid/burial ground?

Is this where the Aztecs intend to toss a dozen virgins to their death?

LOL

The concrete stands from the open end of the Bowl remain. Seems like a great spot for a sacrifice.
