UNLV2001
Reno is now the 80th-largest city in the United States, up from 82nd in 2020, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The government agency estimated Reno's population at 274,915 as of July 1, 2023, an increase of more than 10,000 since the official Census count of April 1, 2020. Reno's population surpassed those of Buffalo, New York; Toledo, Ohio; and Chula Vista, California, during the three-year shuffle of population changes. But in the list of Nevada cities, Reno has fallen to fourth — trailing Las Vegas (660,929), Henderson (337,305) and now North Las Vegas (284,771). The state's most rapid growth occurred in the Las Vegas metro area, which collectively added more than 60,000 residents. The city of Las Vegas is now the 24th-largest city in the U.S. after passing Boston and Portland, Oregon, both of which lost more than 3% of their population. Neighboring Henderson is up to 57th, and North Las Vegas rose to 75th. Overall, Nevada added an estimated 89,559 residents from April 2020 to July 2023 for a 2.9% growth rate. With an estimated 3,194,176 residents, Nevada remains the 32rd most populous state in the U.S., with 70.9% of the state's population living in the Las Vegas metro area.

toonkee
The #24 ranking is based on city limits numbers, right. I mean, no way lv metro is bigger than Boston metro, right?

I always heard we were expected to be at 3 by 2030 or something but that looks to be coming early by 5 years or so. I can remember when we tipped over 1 million. not that long ago. Based on 2020, within a 30 mile radius of Boston the pop is ~4.3 million, Las Vegas 2.6 million. If you reduce to 20 miles, Las Vegas stays the same but Boston goes down to 3.4 million. https://www.freemaptools.com/find-population.htm

I'm not clear on how that works. Boise wasn't even on that list that I linked even though at now 800k by done metrics it's a lot bigger than Reno (which was on it). Metro's are done on a couple of basis - One is the smaller area around the dominant city and the other is a farther reaching that encompasses counties around the city's county For Las Vegas, the wider population total takes in Nye County NV & Mohave County AZ..........while they are adjacent, being out west these are large areas in square miles to most of the "population" in Nye & Mohave Counties are an hour's drive or more from the LV area

UNLV2001
Take the Salt Lake area - There's the SLC immediate area & then they could add in the Provo/Orem and Ogden to Layton to the north which almost triples the basic SLC population

I think that's a bit arbitrary and stretching what it really means to be a MSA, but the West is different.

Out west we are more spread out -- Go to the midwest, south & east and counties are smaller plus there's decent sized smaller cities clustered so a wider radius can really add up where out west it's mostly empty As noted above, does Kingman AZ & Bullhead City AZ both 90+ miles away, are they really part of the LV metro ?!?! I think the Boise MSA includes areas with too much open space separation. Ontario (OR) to Weiser. Mountain Home. Emmett. It doesn't add a ton to the numbers. As you mentioned, SLC would be larger if Ogden-Layton and BYU Metro were not separated. Anyone driving I-15 along the Wasatch Front would now see that whole stretch as one area. I know MSA designations and boundaries get changed over time.
bigd
Wow Henderson is absolutely massive for a suburb. Crazy that it's almost one of the 50th largest cities in the US. I know metro areas are a lot more relevant, but it's wild that more people live in Henderson than Orlando, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, and Buffalo.
