Anecdotally, I have noticed this idea of what Catholicism “should” be is way more common among white people. Not gonna pretend I have data to back this up, just an anecdote.

If you're talking about the fiercely individual and personal conception of religion, oh yeah, for sure. Certain people cling onto Catholicism as a way to return to a completely ahistorical conception of "traditional society." Really it's just modern reactionary and un-Christian (and un-Catholic) rhetoric couched in the adornment of Catholic ritual. And don't get me wrong, ritual is great and has meaning, but using it as a musical theater soundtrack for you to be anti-human and anti-life is despicable.

And when it comes down to it, do you think those people ever vote or advocate for politicians and policies that want to make it easier for women to be mothers? Do you think they actually support paid maternal leave? Free daycare? A guaranteed right to healthcare to ensure safe pregnancies and healthy kids? Never.

More experts in Catholicism on this board than I would’ve guessed.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

The worst part of being Catholic is being in communion with people who hate Catholic teaching...

I left that opening alone last evening.  The best part is being in communion with everyone.  Mystically, everyone.  Not every Roman and Eastern Rite Catholic; everyone.  I wish I was closer to true mysticism, but one day at a time.

Subtract at least one.

The sociology of religion is a fascinating set of inquiry.  Catholicism is large population-wise, geographically vast, and ethnically diverse so it's axiomatic that noticeable differences of all sorts filter in.  That's true for other sects.  I think, for example, you can find divisions among the LDS in practices, acceptances of teaching/authority, etc.  including some in the West that appear to be Mormon versions of Christian Nationalists.  Decentralized Christianity by that very nature is differentiated innumerably.

Honestly, despite the cat guy subtraction, a better conversation than the ever mundane Biden-Trump banter.

Having grown up LDS and having served a two year mission for the church I can attest to this. What I find is that there is less variability in LDS practices than there are in Catholics- who seem to be all over the map in terms of doctrines they adhere to (or believe are doctrine) vs what they don't. I know lots of catholics that use birth control, fornicate and marry after divorce. Mormonism is a bit more all or nothing, though there is more room for divergence from some aspects of the faith than there has been in the past.

Catholicism is very diverse.  I mean, in Idaho we now are filling the ranks with African-born priests.  They have some cultural differences. lol

I think people to a great degree think of religion in terms of rules and regulations.  Rules are emphasized in various teachings.  We need them for many reasons, but they aren't the essence of Christianity.  Recite the Nicean Creed, as I sadly did at a recent funeral for a 17 year old boy at an Episcopal church, and you won't find anything about not drinking coffee or dancing too close or sex before marriage. Christian people used to marry themselves by consent for a thousand or so years before formal rites emerged.

The LDS Church is a young sect.  It emerged out of a homogenous exclave people who became geographically isolated for a critical period of time.  Closer adherence to rules for cohesion is sort of logical and natural.  You can find other sects with parallels.  I think time will as it does show more evolution in and among the LDS faith community.

Too damn many things distract and divide us.  I guess we're just human.

Regarding the existence or non-existence of God

I always wondered if anyone ever had the balls to pray for a sign to know if he (or she, depending on your preference)  is real, and if so which church

by asking to receive a sign on par with Job in the bible (ie asking for a major disease as the sign)

"God....they only way I can know for sure is if you give me cancer or a nasty disease or challenges as a sign..." (sort of thing)

I'd be too chicken

For anyone interested this is a fantastic audio history of Mormonism that historically contextualizes its rise

It's entertaining but not at all hateful (or even really doubtful) at all towards Mormonism

This is excellent. The Last Podcast on the left also does an amazing series on Mormonism that is 99% accurate albeit much more satirical and hilarious. Thanks for sharing.
