Doug Gottlieb: Head Coach?

Recommended Posts

Gobblieb has been lobbying for a D1 head coaching job for years. Looks like Green Bay is giving him a shot to fill the vacancy left by Sundance Wicks going to Wyoming.

That’s a great hire for Green Bay.

Gave that program the most attention it’s had since downing a Jason Kidd-led Cal squad in the tourney over 30 years ago.

Supposedly he is going to continue to do his radio show and Coach at the dame time.

That’s pretty laughable.

part of me was actually kinda pulling for him when he was lobbying on twitter for the UNLV job

he has name recognition, could recruit well, and has a decent knowledge of the game

his rep in coaching circles and in general no bueno

but green bay has nothing to lose taking a shot at him

It’s a great hire by Green Bay, because as you said, they have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. It’s kind of a Deion Sanders Jr. hire because you know the attention and publicity is going to put Green Bay basketball on the map in terms of awareness.

Some love to hate him and some love him, so that’s going to get some ratings and interest. And just like Sanders, can the dude really coach? He knows a lot about BB, maybe even too much for his own good. He could become a victim of Analysis Paralysis and overthink things. It’s definitely going to be a learning curve.

But if I’m a GB BB fan, I’m stoked at the attention it’s getting. If he does well, there’s no way he’s keeping his show. That goes on hold. These kinds of stories make sports interesting. Glad it’s happening and hope he does well.

I think that has more to do with a trial period to see how he adapts before he kisses his big money maker goodbye.
Edit: Just read that he’s contractually required to do 2 hours of show per day. Not sure how long.

At least he does have some sort of coaching experience:

Gottlieb has no coaching experience in college but has coached grassroots/AAU teams from California for a number of years and previously served as an assistant and head coach at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Gottlieb was born in nearby Milwaukee. His late father, Bob, coached the UW-Milwaukee Panthers from 1975-80.”
